One Day
This morning, on his day off, Sergeant Marion Bates will get up at nine AM. He will make breakfast for Danny. As always, the French Toast will be slightly burnt, and Danny will insist on putting chocolate syrup all over it. Marion will let him, just today.
Aunt Shawna will stop by during breakfast. She will bring a pie and some bananas. When Danny is sent off to put away the food, Aunt Shawna will put her hand on Marion's shoulder, and just look at him like she can't believe he is here. When Danny bounces back in the room, Aunt Shawna will give them both a big hug.
After Aunt Shawna leaves, Marion and Danny will sit in front of their television and rewatch the Dallas versus Miami game on their Tivo. They will lament the elimination of the Lakers early in the playoffs, and they will cheer on Shaq as he leads Miami to their first NBA title. Danny will switch some of his Kobe loyalty to Wade, and Marion will tease him about it until Danny announces that he can't have too many basketball heroes.
At two pm, they will start to get ready for Danny's Little League baseball summer practice. Marion will drive Danny to the practice in his blue Ford Taurus, and they will arrive five minutes late.
While Danny is batting, Marion will find himself yelling, "Goooood eye, G-O-O-D-I" as Danny deliberately steps back and not hit when the pitcher throws a ball. He will be shocked that he remembers the cheer, and more shocked as all the Moms and Dads on the sideline smile at him like he's one of them. He will need to take a couple of deep breaths before he can focus on Danny's batting again.
After practice, while the coach is still giving his players pointers, Marion will approach Brittany, a single Mom with beautiful black hair, and start a conversation about the NBA playoffs. At the end of the conversation, Brittany will give Marion her business card with her cell phone number written on the back.
When Danny finds out about Brittany on their drive home, Danny will scowl at Marion, and tell Marion that Kevin's Mom is too old for him. Marion will smile and not answer.
They will get home and play a couple of games on their XBOX, and Marion will pretend that he deliberately lost at Tony Hawk's American Wasteland. Then he will make dinner, which will include a salad. Danny will eat all of the salad but he will only eat a few bites of his pasta. Danny will complain that Marion has completely burnt the pasta again. Marion will say that the pasta is not that burnt, and it will almost be true this time.
Once the last of the dishes are cleared away, Marion will take Danny out to the backyard, where they will play one game of hoops before Marion makes Danny take a shower.
When Danny comes back out into the yard in his Superman pajamas, Marion will be setting up the ridiculous expensive telescope that he bought. Together, they will see one of the moons of Jupiter. At least Marion will think it's Jupiter.
Bates will look for and fail to find the Pegasus Galaxy. He will fail to find the Andromeda Cluster. He will wonder if earth is only a heartbeat away from an invasion by pale monsters with long hungry fingers. His chest will ache a little from those old injuries.
But then Danny will exclaim that he spots a UFO that turns out to be a satellite. And Marion will not regret any of his choices.
