THE ONLY MAN by TO BE REVEALED

Ronon walked through the ‘Gate with his team and saw Mr. Woolsey on the command deck. The man seemed anxious. Having known him for almost two years, this did not surprise the big Satedan until he saw Woolsey relax his shoulders and smile. Worried about the team’s mission, perhaps?

“Good to have you all back,” Woolsey said as he greeted them.

“It’s good to be back,” Sheppard advised. “Not that we found anything.”

Ronon grunted at that.

“Nothing?” Woolsey asked.

“No, that supposedly abandoned Wraith ship blew up as we arrived. I think they were trying to kill us, actually,” Rodney advised, “It appears that the information from the Travelers was planted. The ship detected Lantean technology, at which point, it blew.”

Teyla nodded, “Colonel Sheppard’s flying saved all of us.”

“Couldn’t save the jumper, though. We were lucky there was a planet with a ‘Gate nearby. If we can just gear down, we should be ready to debrief, soon.” Sheppard asked tacit permission.

“I um, was wondering, actually if Ronon would accompany me to the infirmary. Immediately?” Woolsey asked.

“Why?” Ronon inquired.

“Dr. Keller said it would be better if you saw for yourself.”

“Okay.” Ronon followed Woolsey out and rather than stay behind, the whole team joined them.

Dr. Keller was nearby a bed whose occupant was a blonde woman with a head gash. The patient was covered to the neck in sheets and blankets. An IV bag and some other, smaller bag hung from a stand next to the bed and were connected by tubing to the patient’s left arm.

“Oh, good, you’re here, Ronon.”

“Jennifer? What’s . . . what’s the matter?” Rodney asked her.

“I need to see Ronon. Alone,” was the doctor’s only response.

“We’ll just be in the corridor, then,” Sheppard advised, eyeing his teammates to go with him.
Ronon wandered closer toward the sick bed, studying the woman. Her face was serene in sleep, the skin around the wound red and blue. Just below her right ear was a triangular, black tattoo. “So, what’s the problem? Am I dying of something?”

“No, but she is. Ronon, I don’t know how to put this delicately, so I’m going to ask. In order for her to live, she needs a kidney. I’ve got your DNA and blood samples on file. You’re the only match in Atlantis for her.”

“The answer is no.”

“But you haven’t heard me out.”

“She’s Genii, isn’t she?”

“Yes, how did you know?”

“I was a Tracker for some time. I recognize that tattoo. She’s a member of the elite intelligence network. Where’d you find her.”

“We have a treaty with the Genii, so I hardly think that matters. One of the teams-“
“You’re right, it doesn’t matter, the answer is no.” Ronon stalked out of the room as Dr. Keller tried to call him back.

In his quarters, Ronon showered and changed. He did not enjoy behaving rudely toward the doctor or anyone on Atlantis for that matter. He had a home here, and he was still her friend. This was too much to ask. A Wraith may as well ask for a kidney, same answer. The Genii were not to be trusted, treaty or not.

His door chime rang, and he ordered the door open. Mr. Woolsey stepped inside.

“You should have sent her back to them.” Ronon said, not rising from his position on his bed.
“We’ve contacted Ladon Radim and informed him that she’s too ill to be moved. You may not know this, but they don’t have the ability to screen their people as candidates for a transplant, and Dr. Keller says she does not have time. The woman took a bad fall and ruptured her kidneys while trying to escape the Wraith. It’s lucky our team found her at all. They were not expecting the Wraith on P6A-421.”

“If I do this, I could die, right?”

“There’s a remote chance of that from what I understand, yes.”

“And the woman may die anyway, right?”

“Possibly.”

“No.”

“That’s it? Just no?”

“No.” Ronon stood to see Mr. Woolsey out, giving him his best sneer. The other man took his meaning immediately.

Shortly thereafter, Ronon’s door chimed again. This time, John Sheppard strode through the entrance.

“I told Mr. Woolsey and Dr. Keller that the answer is no,” Ronon stated forecefully. He did not wish to argue with his friend.

“I know that. It’s just that. . . it would really help our relationship with the Genii if we help this woman.”

“She got a name?”

“Daniya Madrod, first level captain. She was trying to ascertain why the Wraith were on that planet. She’d been watching them for two days when she was discovered. They were about to contact us for help when we happened to find her.”

“That’s too bad. It ‘d be different if it was one of ours. I want you to know that. I can’t trust the Genii any more than I trust the Wraith.”

John nodded. “ Okay. It’s your body, and your decision.”

Ronon was eating a late supper in the mess hall, where Teyla found him ruminating and picking over bowtie pasta and alfredo sauce. She was frowning as she sat across from him.
“I’m not going to do it.”

Teyla shook her head, “I am here to tell you that you do not need to do it. Daniya has died.”
“I’m sorry to hear that.”

“Are you? Truly?”

“Yeah. I am. I hope that she went peacefully, whatever her intent may have been. If I am going to destroy the Wraith, I can’t save the Genii, too.” Ronon stood and slowly walked out of the mess hall.
