I've not been participating because there's not really been anythng for me to do. I'm not interested in either the writing or reading of episode fic, drabbles, art or whatever.
I really enjoy episode recaps - they give the writer an opportunty to be creative, and make comments on the episode that others can then bounce off. It offers a central place for discussion. Questions - whether silly or serious are also great fun, and an get people thinking about things they've never thought of, or just being humorous.
I've seen this work really well in another rewatch community, and I'm sad it's not been done in this one.
We've had a lack of folk who know how that stuff is done and have the gumption to do it, alas ... but we may have a recap and possibly chat coordinator, so that may help. And I'm going to try to collect prompted questions to include in the discussion posts, to stir the pot a bit.
Thanks for all your hard worksporangiaJanuary 4 2010, 04:56:43 UTC
I have been busy making Icons, and have lots more coming. I am trying to get at least one drabble entry done per episode, but I'm falling behind on that

Aw, thanks!
I adore the little buried ideas in the discussions; I just have fallen down on getting into those discussions myself. I'll be trying to be better about that. If we go back to a weekly schedule, do you think you might still be motivated to do icons (or possibly even fic) for episodes that grab you, rather than feeling pressured to try to produce for each one?

I admit to loving the two week schedule, but I understand that it is inconvenient for others. I want to make icons for all the episodes in the first season. It's a learn Photoshop project, so I will eventually get them done. I don't feel rushed because even with the two week schedule I would eventually fall behind. I'm slowing down a bit because as I learn to do more sophisticated things with the program I'm attempting to apply what I've learned to produce more refined icons. It's absolutely fascinating me, which is why I'm not getting much writing done

I haven't actually seen any guides for how to write drabbles - or, frankly, fanfiction in general, beyond watching what people say about badfic. Heh.
Personally, I approach drabbles as almsot poetry, specifically structured exercises like sonnets (fourteen lines using one of a few predefined rhyme schemes) or haiku (typically seventeen syllables, but ideally with specific attributes and themes). So I stick to the rigid 100-word interpretation and try to choose a moment, idea, or theme to focus those 100 words on. Then it's a matter of tweaking back and forth to hit the wordcount without being stilted and making sure the language feels just right.
That's in contrast to my regular fiction, which goes on and on (and on, heh) and where I'm stretching my legs, so to speak. All that said, there are as many ways to write drabbles as there are to approach any structured prose or poetry format, I suspect. And I need to get better about the rewatch myself so I can play again ....
I'm sorry I haven't been more active, but I plan to be from here-on-out! I'd love to do some episode recaps.
The redial-the-gate community has a monthly chat where everyone logs on to chat at a specific date/time and hits "play" together on an episode. I think that would be fun for this community. They use AIM, but IRC or another chat client is also an option.
