Elizabeth took a deep breath as she stepped outside main dining hall of the council chambers of Dragaria. It had been a rather long day of negotiations but she was happy with the outcome. The Dragarians would be receiving plenty of agricultural help and those results would yield enough crops for them and the expedition team.
She thought back to her Father's stuffy lawyer parties and smiled as a light breeze caressed her face. She could definitely give those men a run for their money, but on this world women weren't exactly equal to men. However, a conversation with Malona, the President’s wife, revealed they did accept the fact that Elizabeth was leader of their expedition because they knew not to judge the cultures of other people.
Even though she hadn't been outside long, Elizabeth decided to head back in. Malona also told her of a recent attack against young women in the city. If John couldn't find her, he'd send out a search party with him leading it. She turned only to run into a rather large man.
"Oh, excuse me!" She said, smiling apologetically at him and attempting to step around the man.
He moved in the same direction. "Where are you going?"
"Back inside if you don't mind."
He grabbed her shoulders and squeezed tightly. "No, I think I like you better right here."
Panic seized Elizabeth's heart. This man was ten times stronger than her. She couldn't even squirm in his grasp. "Let me go, please."
"I don't think so," he replied, capturing her mouth with his.
Elizabeth was finally able to swing her leg in for a kick to the groin. He grunted in pain, but did not let go of her. Instead he smacked her across the face. All Elizabeth could see were stars.
"Well, it looks like I'm going to have to teach you a lesson, aren't I?" he asked with a laugh.
The man let go of her left arm and began dragging her towards the woods. Elizabeth slapped at the radio in her ear, praying that John would hear her.
***********
John leaned against the wall away from the crowd. There were just too many people around for his liking. He only hoped this shindig or whatever would be over soon.
Glancing over at the President's table, he noticed Elizabeth's chair was empty. John immediately began scanning the room for her with no luck. He found Ronon and Teyla with some of the soldiers, but they had not seen her for quite some time.
Rodney bounded up to him a few minutes later and kept going on and on about
Something.
"Not now, McKay!"
"What? Well, excuse me for thinking you might be interested in this."
"Right now I'm more interested in finding out where Elizabeth went." Especially after what he heard from Malona not too long ago, he added to himself.
Rodney pointed to the door. "She said she wanted to get some air."
"And neither of you bothered to let me know?" John asked.
"I highly doubt..." He trailed off, noting John's distress. "What's wrong?"
Instead of replying, John rushed to the door, spotting some burly-looking guy dragging Elizabeth into the forest. He tapped his radio. "Ronon and Teyla meet me outside ASAP! Some guy has Elizabeth. I’m going after them!"
“Understood, John,” Came Teyla’s response.
John took off after them. He could see Elizabeth struggling in the man's grasp and that made him move faster.
"John..." she whispered over the radio.
He had never heard so much fear in her voice and that scared the shit out of him. Elizabeth was one of the strongest people he knew.
When they stopped, John screeched to a halt to keep from barreling straight through the trees. He needed the element of surprise especially since he had no clue how he was going to attack Burly.
John decided he’d just use his 9mil to knock the man out. He quietly advanced on Burly, making certain Elizabeth was far enough away.
Unfortunately the guy didn't feel the effect of a metal object slamming into the back of his head. He turned around to find John smirking. "Sorry, thought that would at least daze you..."
John heard Elizabeth calling for his team. "Ronon, Teyla, Rodney, come in!"
"We are on our way, Elizabeth," Teyla responded.
"Good," she said. "Because I don't know how long John will last against this guy."
Burly grabbed John by the lapels of his vest and tossed him into a nearby tree. He shook his head and stood up as Burly charged him, brandishing the 9mil. Just as he reached him, the weapon discharged and blinding pain shot through John's lower right thigh.
************
The man wasn't finished, clocking John on the side of the head. Elizabeth cried out as John fell in a heap on the ground. The man turned and glared at her, obviously pissed off.
The man staggered as red energy sizzled around him. Ronon burst through the trees, firing twice more before her attacker also fell to the ground. Ronon knelt next to Elizabeth while Rodney and Teyla checked on John.
"You okay?" he asked, helping her up.
"I am now, thanks. Teyla?"
Teyla pulled a meager med kit from her pack. "I believe the bullet is still in his leg. He has a blow to the head as well."
"Rodney, head back to the city and inform the President what happened," Elizabeth ordered. "Then call Atlantis and send for a Jumper."
"Me?!?"
Ronon stood, moving closer to the unconscious Dragarian. "You really wanna be here when he wakes up?"
"I'll be back as soon as possible," Rodney replied.
Once Teyla finished dressing John's wounds, Elizabeth could feel her eyes on her. She was shivering as she watched the rise and fall of John's chest, most likely from shock.
"Ronon," Teyla said.
The man looked up and nodded as he removed his coat and placed it on Elizabeth's shoulders. When she didn't acknowledge the gesture, Ronon knelt down and turned her face to his, making eye contact.
"You're safe now. You both are."
"Safe," Elizabeth replied quietly.
***********
Carson took a deep breath as he watched John sleep. The Colonel had beaten the odds yet again. They were able to remove the bullet with little difficulty so the only thing they needed to be concerned about was the head injury.
John had a very serious concussion and Carson was afraid that if they didn't monitor him close enough, he would slip into a coma. However before he went to off to bed and allowed his staff to take over, Carson went to check on his patient.
He glanced over at Elizabeth who was sleeping a few beds away. Dr. Cole treated her for shock and various other small injuries. Carson shuddered to think what could have happened if John hadn't shown up when he did.
Speaking of John, it was time to wake him again. Placing a hand on his shoulder, and being careful not to jostle him too much, Carson said, "Colonel, time to wake up. Colonel?"
John moaned, eliciting a sigh of relief from the physician. "Doc, that's not very nice. I was having a really good dream."
"Aye, I'm sorry, Colonel. I just need to check your vitals and..." he trailed off when he saw the expression of confusion in his friend's eyes. "Colonel?"
"Doc, what happened?"
Before Carson could reply, Rodney came up to them and said, "You were playing the hero again, Sheppard. Elizabeth was attacked by a guy who could probably give Ronon a run for his money and you decided getting shot and clobbered in the head would be fun."
"I... what?" John squeezed his eyes shut. "Hurts, Doc."
"Colonel?!"
After a few minutes John's eyes blinked open. "Sorry, it's better now."
"You don't look better. In fact I'd have to say you seem a mite paler than before," Carson replied. "Do you feel nauseated?"
"A bit."
"How's your pain?"
"Three."
Rodney scoffed, "Which loosely translated means eight!"
"Rodney, you're not helping. Why don't you check on Elizabeth?"
John chuckled as Rodney stalked away. "Thanks, Doc."
"Don't think about changing the subject, Colonel. Is Rodney right?"
"Yeah."
"Thank you," Carson said. "I'll dim the lights a little more and bring something to help with the pain. And I'll be back in about an hour to check on you whether you're sleeping or not."
"Got it, Carson."
Once Carson left, dimming the lights on the way, John settled back into bed. He was happy to note that the nausea seemed to have abated for now but he had the emesis basin on hand just in case.
John finally drifted off to sleep about five minutes later.
************
Elizabeth sat down next to John's bed. It was late and Carson would probably be upset with her for not sleeping, but she couldn't. Every time she closed her eyes she saw him coming for her.
She saw him attack John, but in her dreams, John didn't survive.
Elizabeth never thought she'd fall in love again after Simon. John Sheppard had changed that when he looked her straight in the eye and told her he just had to deliver that damn nuke up to the hive ship during the Siege on Atlantis, his innocent expression touching a part of her she had thought dead.
Elizabeth wasn't sure if he reciprocated those feelings, which was fine by her, for now at least, because she really didn't want to deal with the IOA on that front!
John stirred, saying her name.
Elizabeth took his hand in hers. "I'm right here, John."
"Hey," he said, blinking his eyes open and glancing at the cup of water near his head.
Elizabeth helped him take a sip. "Thanks," John sighed. "How are you feeling?"
She shook her head. "You were the one who was knocked unconscious and shot!"
"Maybe," John replied, "but I remember why now."
Elizabeth looked at their hands intertwined. "I'm sorry," she whispered.
"What for? Elizabeth, the last time I checked you weren't the one pulling the trigger."
"I know that, John," she said, tears in her eyes. She sat quietly, staring at her hands. "But I should have told you where I was going! I should have taken you with me."
John made a move to sit up, wincing and massaging his leg. "The point is we're alive... you're alive, Elizabeth! If something happened to you... If I hadn't gotten there in time... I don't..."
Elizabeth was stunned by his outburst. "John, relax and lie down. I'm alive, just like you said."
John did as he was told and she was happy to note he calmed down. "Sorry," he muttered.
"Don't worry. I won't tell anyone. Let's just hope the nurse didn't hear anything because they'll kick me out. Now, as I said, relax. I'll be right here."
John nodded. "Promise you'll go back to bed after I fall asleep. You need your rest, too."
"I will," she replied, kissing him softly on the lips. "Just close your eyes."
"Night, 'Lizabeth."
"Good night, John."
