I like that Lin explores gender in an unusual way in this story, even for genderswap fic. John doesn't become all that different, really, and it's great that the change is so unremarkable that it goes unnoticed. I also love the way Lin delineates the small alterations with a fine hand for detail; I adore that she mentions, for instance, that woman!John can run longer and just as fast with Ronon. I can well imagine, too, that female grooming would totally daunt most men---both as a gender issue, and simply as an intimidating and painful experience---so I think it's very realistic that John shies away from the idea
( ... )
Guys almost always get turned into curvy women with big breasts and long hair, shorter than they were as guys, and all that stuff.
Yes, I have (with rather a lot of puzzlement) noticed that, too. I'm not really sure why that's such a common thing; I find Lin's version more believable. Maybe it's from the same sort of impulse which ends in so many fics in which the men are extremely well-hung.
I loved that Rodney was the one who picked up on John's change - though John did give him a leading clue - and that John was beautiful in Rodney's eyes just as he is.
I agree with Lyr that there's a sweetness to Rodney's reaction that's, wow, everything you could hope for in a friend; a willingness to go down the path with you.
Oh yes, it was nice that Rodney was the first to pick up on the change, leading clue or no. Mind you, I think Teyla had her suspicions for a minute there.
"So, I noticed that you are a bit...physically different than you were yesterday."
I'm not familiar with the movie "At the Violet Hour," but whoa, when I Googled it, a rather luxurious restaurant in Chicago came up far before the play did. It doesn't take reservations, which somehow seems rather apt.
