"What happened?" he asked.
"I figured it out." Carson's smile was sad. "And then I slowly came to accept what I was-- who I was. Conall was two when I came out. We never married, but they lived with us and I did my best to support them. Mum took care of him during the day so we could finish our schooling. I'd been working up the nerve for days and finally told them both one Saturday morning. Afterwards Kenna-- Conall's mother-- asked if Mum and I could give her some time. Honestly, I think Mum needed some time with me anyway, so we went out together and spent some time talking. When we got home, they were gone. There was no note, nothing. She'd just simply thrown together everything and left."
"God! I'm... I'm so sorry."
"We did eventually find them, but years had passed. He didn't recognise me and she had married-- a fine man and a good father-- and didn't want me in his life. She felt I'd be a bad influence. So I've stayed away, though I've tried to keep track of him. He plays on his school's football team and is quite the local sensation." Carson's smile was more genuine this time. "It appears from a small interview I read in the paper that he plans to become a doctor."

"How can I even expect to make a good parent? You've heard what my parents were like. Wouldn't that carry through to me?"
Kate shifted in her chair, her expression open. "Rodney, if this isn't what you want, you don't need an excuse. It's perfectly understandable that you wouldn't want to go through with this. You're in a unique situation, fraught with great risk, and long-term consequences. No one will think worse of you for choosing an abortion."
"Carson might."
"He understands probably more than anyone the physical risks you're facing. Do you really think he'd hold it against you?"
Rodney fidgeted, thinking about his lover, thinking about John's story, thinking about Carson's loss of one child in his life. Carson wasn't pushing, would never push, but Rodney saw this situation for what it was-- Carson's last chance to be the father he always wanted to be. "He'd try not to. Maybe he'd even believe he didn't."
She nodded. "But you think that it would still hurt him."
"Yes. Don't you?"
"His feelings aren't the only thing that matters in this case, though. Your feelings, your health, even this expedition have to come into consideration. And then there's the question of whether this is a good situation for a child."
"People are raising children all over the Pegasus Galaxy. The only worlds where children are rare are ones where they've given up hope, given up life. Why are we any different here in Atlantis?"
"That's a good question. Is our situation any different?"
"We're not really set up for children-- we aren't really a society in the same sense as the other planets in the Pegasus. But we could change that."
"Do you want to change that?"
"I don't know. It comes back to the question of whether I should even be considering parenthood, given my own parents."
She nodded. "Something in the neighbourhood of 35% of abused and neglected children will become abusive or neglectful parents if they become parents. It's a rather frightening statistic."
Rodney nodded.
"On the other hand, it's also a hopeful statistic."
"I don't understand."
"The flip side of that statistic is that some 65% of those children don't become abusive or neglectful parents. It means we all have a choice. You can choose to be a good parent, Rodney... if that's what you want."

Carson's hands slid over his body, indolent and sensual, touching everywhere with the same reverence whether it was the curve of his shoulder, the back of his elbow, or the bud of a nipple. Fingers trailed fire across his skin until Rodney felt like he was going to fly apart with need.
"Carson," he gasped.
Carson's eyes crinkled at the corners as he smiled at his lover. "Impatient, are we, love?"
"Please," Rodney begged.
Carson had always had more self-control, could hold out longer and enjoyed the tension of desire as much as the pleasure of release. His eyes sparkled. "You know, Rodney, one of these days I'm going to have to try tying you up to make you learn to wait."
Rodney couldn't help the groan that escaped as he pictured himself at Carson's mercy.
"I see you like idea, love," Carson whispered, hand drifting across Rodney's belly, a possessive glint in his eyes.
Rodney whimpered. "Please, Carson, not tonight. I need you."
"Aye, not tonight. But one day soon." His hand dipped lower, following the trail of dark hair into the nest of curls at the base of his lover's cock.
Rodney moaned, hips thrusting up helplessly as Carson ran a finger lightly down his erection.
"Ah, wait, love. Soon. Just let me play with ye a bit more."
He bit his lip as Carson's hands lightly caressed his cock, then moved to his balls, palming them lightly. Rodney had never had a lover who simply took such great delight in his body-- all of his body. He looked at Carson's face, unguarded in this moment, and saw the light in his eyes, the softness, the wonder, as if Carson was still in awe that he had Rodney here with him. It made Rodney's heart clench to see it, certain his own eyes were a reflection of Carson's.
When had this turned into something more than friends who fucked?
"Carson," he said quietly, feeling his heart begin pounding with the knowledge of what he was about to say. His lover looked at him, still unfocused, hands still gently caressing him. "I want to keep it... if you'll..." He swallowed hard. "If you'll promise to... to be there."
Carson stilled, his breath caught, eyes suddenly intent on Rodney. "Oh, love," he finally whispered, "are ye sure?"
"I'm... I'm sure. But you have to promise... not just at the start, but--"
"Shhh, Rodney love, I'll be there. Always. I swear it."
And then Carson was against him, pulling him into a kiss, holding him, and it wasn't enough. He needed... he needed... and Carson gave without him asking, without him knowing what he even wanted, until they were moving together, Carson inside him, making love to him gently, slowly, just hard enough and fast enough to keep them together and no faster. Their kisses were equally tender as Carson's tears wet both their faces.
It felt like hours before Rodney came with a groan and Carson followed him over the edge, repeating "Ah, love, yes," as he did so.
He came back to himself safe in the circle of Carson's arms and realised what this was, though Carson had never said the words, too afraid, perhaps, that it would feel like he was manipulating Rodney.
"I love you, Carson," he whispered into his lover's hair.
Carson sighed and kissed him. "I love you, too."
