Rodney glared balefully down at his shoes. "Can I call in sick because my shoes don't fit?"
"Did ye try your slippers."
"Hello? I said shoes. Last time I checked, I didn't allow Miko to wear her 'Hello, Kitty' or Simpson her giant pink fluffy bunny things into the lab."
"Should I ask how ye know anything about the ladies' footwear?"
"Miko wore hers once to a movie night. As for Simpson, I had occasion to wake her up one night and, um, well, let's just say it was the safest place to look. I'm not sure what the purpose of her so-called robe was."
Carson chuckled. "Actually, I think I remember the outfit from the time we had that intestinal virus going about. But back to the original question... Your slippers are practically shoes as it is. You should try them on. Everyone will understand."
"Mmmm..." Rodney said non-committally.
Carson dropped the leather slippers in front of his lover. "There's a reason for the phrase 'barefoot and pregnant' you know."
Rodney sighed and slipped his feet into them, wincing. "I hate you."
Carson leaned down and kissed him. "I'll ask around after larger shoes ye could borrow. Will they do for now?"
"I'll live."
"Try to keep your feet up as much as possible, love."
Rodney rolled his eyes. "Like that's going to happen."
Carson leaned in, licking around the shell of Rodney's ear and then breathing into it, "I'll make it worth your while."
Rodney shuddered.
Carson kissed him and stood. "I've got to go. Meet me for lunch?" Rodney blinked and nodded. Carson grinned. Rodney could complain about hating him all he wanted, but Carson knew better.

"So, just the two of us today?" Kavanagh asked, setting his tray down. "Where is everyone?"
"McKay's having lunch with Beckett... in private," Simpson answered. "Vogel's group is in the middle of something. Miko's with Colonel Sheppard and Zelenka's with Dex and Emmagan." She inclined her head.
Kavanagh looked to where Radek was joking and laughing with Atlantis's resident aliens. He scowled. "Even more scientists fall to the appeal of the brainless warrior types."
Simpson stared at him in shock. "What? Are you insinuating Zelenka and Dex are involved?"
Kavanagh snorted. "Dex isn't the only brainless warrior at that table. Look how he's flirting with her."
Simpson's eyes narrowed. "Oh, don't you go insulting Teyla. She's far from brainless."
He rolled his eyes. "Sure. You women just stick together."
She stood stiffly and picked up her tray. "I'm done now. Have fun eating alone."

John glanced at Dr. Schmidt carrying forth as he examined various doodads at a booth. "Keep an eye on him," he murmured to Teyla and then wandered off toward the jewelry trader he'd spotted on the way.

Carson paused just inside the door to his apartment and sighed. "Not you, too?"
Radek looked up and shrugged. "I was invited?"
"The stretching exercises will not harm his ankle," Teyla said, eyes still closed.
"He needs to stay limber," Ronon said.
"Oh, aye, for all the running away he'll be doing once he gets off his crutches."
Teyla and Ronon gave Rodney accusing glances. He shrugged.

Radek woke slowly and stretched, curling up to the warm body beside him. He let his hands trace down the other man's back and to his buttocks, where Radek lingered, stroking gently, remembering the previous night. The military man stirred, mumbling.
"Good morning," Radek purred, slipping a finger down to follow the crease.
"Mmmmh," his lover answered, shifting his legs farther apart.
Radek could feel he was still slick from the night before. He rolled over, straddling the other man and pressed against him, feeling the body below him pressing back, opening under him.
"Oh, yeah," his lover moaned.
Radek sighed and then winced as his ankle throbbed.
"Problem?"
"Not much. But I will be glad when this ankle is better."
"Mmhmm!" his lover agreed.
And then Radek lost himself in the pleasure of his lover's welcoming body, forgetting his pain.

Elizabeth looked up from her laptop. "All right, gentlemen, I think we've got it all arranged now. I'll file the forms when we send our next transmission in a couple of hours, then we'll be all set."
"Thank you, Elizabeth," Carson said, nodding.
"You're welcome. I got your email with the vows you want to use. Have you made any changes since then?"
Rodney shook his head. "No. We're pretty much set with them."
"Good. I'm assuming with the mention of rings that you've got some coming?"
"Actually, I'm using my father's wedding ring," Carson said.
"Colonel Sheppard is picking one up for me the next time they go to P3S-287," Rodney said.
She looked surprised. "That's very... trusting of you."
"He took pictures," Rodney explained. "And it's not like I can go myself."

Carson regarded the woman sitting in front of him as he gently took her hand. "I'd hoped this would be happy news for you."
Teyla nodded, frowning. "Among my people this would, indeed, be happy news, but..."
He'd never seen her cry-- not really. He squeezed her hand slightly and waited for her to get herself under control.
"My bloodline... The people who have the gift..."
"The wraith genetics?"
She nodded. "The line of those who carry the gift has almost died out because... it is difficult to carry a child to term. Something about it weakens us or- or causes the child within to sicken and die... I am uncertain as to the precise nature of the problem."
"But a man with the wraith DNA?"
"Can father a child without difficulty. The problem lies within the womb."
"Have you had pregnancies that have ended in miscarriage?"
"Three."
His heart clenched at the pain in her voice. "I'll do some tests and see if there's anything that can be done."
"Thank you, Doctor."
"It's the least we can do for you." He sat for a moment, but finally succumbed, needing to know. "Is there a man I should be including in these medical discussions?"
She hesitated. "I would like to consult with him before revealing his name to you."
Carson nodded. "I understand. I'm not trying to invade your privacy." He took a deep breath. "Now, I know this will be difficult, but it would help me to determine the cause of your miscarriages if you can describe the course of your pregnancies and any difficulties you had throughout them. Can you do that?"
She swiped at her eyes and squared her shoulders. "I will try."

Miko sat listening and watching the video letter on her laptop as her sister talked about the family news, events at college and the like. She was giggling along until Chiharu's face turned suddenly serious.
"Now that I have bored you with all the news, I have to complain about your last letter." Chiharu rolled her eyes. "Honestly, Miko, a gaijin? And not just any gaijin, but an American! And even worse, a military man! Father is beside himself and mother has started hinting that she is ill and I need to come home to care for her. I put up with this after your first letter and almost didn't get to stay here. You are going to ruin my college career! And grandfather! Tell me you are not serious about him. Can't you find a nice Japanese man on this international project of yours? If I must go home and not finish my schooling, it will be all your fault! And you and your gaijin can support me when I am old and poor." Chiharu smiled then. "He is very pretty, though. But you can find a nice, pretty Japanese man, I am sure. Have mercy on your poor little sister. And whatever you do, think of mother's heart before you do anything crazy!"
Miko looked down to where a diamond and gold ring sparkled on her left hand, smiled, and shook her head at the screen. "Sorry, Chiharu."

Rodney scrambled off his chair, hand reaching for a gun that wasn't there while his eyes scanned for cover when Simpson screamed. He turned wide eyes to the scientist to find her throwing her arms around Miko. "What the--?"
"Oh, Miko, honey! It's beautiful! I'm so happy for you!"
Half the lab-- mostly the female half, Rodney noted-- were rushing over to Miko to admire... Was that a ring?
"Congratulations, Colonel."
"Thanks, Radek."
Rodney looked toward the doorway where Colonel Sheppard was standing, looking a little lost and a lot embarrassed by the scene before him. He looked up and gave Rodney a grin and a shrug. "You could warn a man," Rodney snapped at him as he sauntered in. "I could have had a heart attack."
"Aw, come on, Rodney. It's not every day I get to sur-- Rodney? Rodney!"

The world came back in a susuration of panicked whispers.
"Shh... It's all right. Just lie still, love," Carson's voice said.
Rodney could feel a blood pressure cuff deflating, stethoscope pressed to his arm. He blinked his eyes, his lover's face coming into focus. "Carson? What happened?"
"You fainted. How are you feeling?"
"Um. A little shaky."
"Did ye have breakfast?"
Rodney gave Carson an apologetic look. "No."
Carson frowned. "I understand you had a wee bit of a start here?"
"Simpson screamed. I almost jumped out of my skin."
"Sorry, Doctor McKay," Simpson said, sounding dejected and suddenly looking teary-eyed.
"All right," Carson said, fingers brushing his face. "I think it's mostly due to low blood sugar and the adrenaline and blood pressure spike, but I'm going to have you down to the infirmary for observation. Okay?"
Rodney nodded mutely.
Carson reached down and squeezed his hand, then stepped back, letting his team in with a gurney. Rodney looked over to see Sheppard holding Miko close, her ring sparkling in the light as she held on to the colonel's hand, then the world went a little crazy as he was lifted onto the gurney and then they were moving, worried faces sliding past. He looked up and saw Carson following and, behind him, Colonel Sheppard.
"Sorry," he said, eyes on Sheppard.
"For what?" the colonel asked.
"Ruining your big announcement."
Sheppard grinned. "You do have a way of staying the center of attention, McKay. Ow!" He glared at Carson who just gave him an innocent look.
Rodney settled a hand over his abdomen, where his son had taken a sudden interest in acrobatics. "He's okay, right?"
"I'm sure he's fine, love," Carson assured him. "Just relax."
Carson smiled down at him, but Rodney caught the barest glint of worry in his lover's eyes. He stroked slowly across his protruding belly and promised himself, heartburn or no, he'd do better-- for Carson, for his son.
