Newbie Guide: The Essential Sheppard Fics

As with my Carson Beckett, Ronon Dex, Teyla Emmagan, Aiden Ford, and Rodney McKay newbie guide posts, I'm trying to gather what people would consider the essential fics that aren't, as in most guides, exclusively McKay/Sheppard or Sheppard/Weir. Thus, the next title character by alpha order is John Sheppard

Your Cowboy Days are Over ( http://www.butcheredart.net/Fiction/YourCowboyDays.html ) by M. is absolutely THE Sheppard story in my mind. It's gen, with very minor background Sheppard/OFC, and AU from the end of Season 2.

Also:

Deflection ( http://www.ltljverse.com/watergate/stories/deflection.htm ) by ltlj - besides being a really nice snapshot of Sheppard -- his paranoia, his darker side, his team's loyalty to him -- it's also one of the most well-plotted SGA stories I've ever read. Short and beautifully crafted

It is a very well-written fic with a great characterization of John. The actions he takes in the fic may be guided by film, but they are very believable for the character and his later reactions even better. I enjoyed the story a lot and try to pass it on to people wanting John fic.
