if i were a supermarket checkout clerk, i would totally invent backstories for all the customers based on what they had in their shopping baskets that day. my shopping baskets are always pedestrian, always full of things like toilet paper, drano, milk and bread. but i would invent stories for the guy with the twelve Snickers bars and a copy of Cosmo; the woman with the baby formula, the hair dye and the insecticide; the girl with two apples, a head of lettuce and a single mushroom.
