Title: Only Someone Running
Creator's Name: busaikko
Crossover with: Thoughtcrimes
Pairing: pretty much Rodney McKay/Brendan Dean
Rating: Mature
Wordcount ~7800
Do you need to be familiar with the non-SGA source to enjoy this story? The author said: "This story spoils for Thoughtcrimes (film) and SGA S4 This Mortal Coil. It will make sense if you are not familiar with Thoughtcrimes; it will be very confusing if you are not familiar with S4 SGA." The minimum to know about Thoughtcrimes before you read this: Freya McAllister is a telepath seconded to the NSA, where her partner is Brendan Dean (who was played by Joe Flanigan in his pre-Sheppard days). Together, they fight crime.
Why I chose this: Intriguing premise, great characterizations, and I really liked the Freya POV - seeing Rodney's presence and hints about the Stargate program from her outsider's perspective. I'd love to read a sequel.
Excerpt:
"It's like he comes from a whole different planet," Brendan said. "I met him and it's like, he followed me home, mom, can I keep him. He doesn't have a job, he has a computer and a toothbrush and three t-shirts, he didn't even have a coat when he moved in." Brendan took a rather wild breath. "He calls me John. Sometimes. He gave me the ring, but I think he promised it to John."

Title: Silk and Pearls (or, How Jane Sheppard Got Her Groove Back)
Creator's Name: rageprufrock
Crossover with: Smallville
Pairings: Jane Sheppard/Lex Luthor, Jane Sheppard/Rodney McKay, Lex Luthor/Clark Kent
Rating: Not worksafe
Wordcount ~20,000
Do you need to be familiar with the non-SGA source to enjoy this story? Barely. You can even get by without reading the prequel (Lustrous), as long as you know that: In this universe there's a Jane Sheppard instead of a John. She was married for a long time to millionaire-businessman Rodney McKay, who is the father of her baby but kind of a jerk. The SGC exists, but neither Rodney or Jane went to Atlantis.
Why I chose this: The interaction between Jane Sheppard and Lex Luthor is great fun. Jane is totally unimpressed by Luthor's wealth and wooing techniques, while Rodney is so very threatened by Luthor being wealthier than he is and his claim on Jane's affections. Plus there's special family holiday moments, kidnapping, and Superman being entertainingly uncool, delicate, and jealous.
Excerpt:
But then he'd started in on the dirty emails.

Have you ever looked at the upper corners of rooms during interminable meetings? Lex wrote her the week after. That place where three vertices meet makes me think about the perfect apex between a woman's thighs - shadowed and mathematically-difficult to navigate. By the way, I've been assured by a phalanx of my yes-men that my pick-up lines are phenomenal.

Title: The Big Bang and Everything After
Creator's Name: mandysbitch
Crossover with: Firefly
Pairing: Rodney McKay/River Tam
Rating: Almost worksafe.
Wordcount ~4200
Do you need to be familiar with the non-SGA source to enjoy this story? You'll appreciate it a lot more if you are.
Why I chose this: Like "Only Someone Running" (above), this story shows Rodney through the eyes of a young woman telepath. However, River Tam doesn't pass for normal as well as Freya McAllister, and here, instead of Rodney crossing over into present-day Earth, he's found in a cryo-pod by Serenity's crew, centuries after the Atlantis expedition. An interesting premise, a great overall River voice, and the developing relationship between Rodney and River feels convincing.
Excerpt:
"What are you doing?" he says.

"Mian tiao," she says. "I've found the formula."

"So I see..." He rubs his chin and nods, and then his eyes go wide. "This is incredible. What's this?" He points to a symbol, a picture of a hand. He doesn't wait for her explanation. "No, wait - what's this?" He points to two curved lines.

"Noodles," she says. "Mian tiao."

"Noodles?" he says. "This equation - this formula - is for the critical mass of a traversable wormhole, a stargate wormhole, no less. Your end result is noodles?"

"Gravity," she says. "Turns you into noodles if you don't get it right."

Title: And That's For Remembrance
Creator's Name: seperis
Crossover with: The Bourne (movies) trilogy
Primary pairings: Jason Bourne/John Sheppard, Jason Bourne/Marie Kreutz
Rating: Not worksafe.
Wordcount ~7700
Do you need to be familiar with the non-SGA source to enjoy this story? It'll be confusing if you're completely unfamiliar with Bourne canon.
Why I chose this: John used to be part of the same high-level covert assassin's program as Jason Bourne, but unlike Jason, he doesn't remember. The intriguing concept, gradual reveal of more of the background and players (partly through flashbacks), and another intelligent outsider (Bourne's) POV make this a memorable story. Also, hot.
Excerpt:
O'Neill finishes his beer, standing up. "I know what it's like not to know," O'Neill says, voice low, rumbling a warning underneath that Jason can't help but hear. "The thing is, he doesn't. See you around, Bourne."

Title: Far Far Away
Creator's Name: astolat
Crossover with: American Idol
Pairings: John Sheppard/Adam Lambert, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay UST
Rating: Not worksafe.
Wordcount ~3200
Do you need to be familiar with the non-SGA source to enjoy this story? No. (I've never seen American Idol, but loved this.)
Why I chose this: It's hilarious. Adam Lambert comes to Atlantis to help the expedition with a diplomatic mission where singing is required. He acquires a whole new planet of rabid fans, snogs John, and annoys Rodney no end.
Excerpt:
"So - you guys aren't together?" Adam said, doubtfully, like he didn't believe it.

"Of course we're not together," Rodney said. "He's straight, and also he has incredibly bad taste."

"Hey!" John said.

"Hey!" Adam said.
