Yes, I'm lazy, and I could really do with not having to figure out how much to tip every time I eat out. Such events almost always happen with a bunch of friends, and hence such a system would make splitting the bill much less annoying.

I love how this is billed as something different, new, radical. It's not. Restaurants (maybe 10% of them) have been adding automatic gratuity surcharges for years (something which guarantees I won't be giving them a cent more than what's on the bill). And in much of Europe (and other parts of the world) tips are included/don't exist, and tax, both in restaurants and everywhere else, is factored into the advertised price.

So even if you assumed North America is the centre of the universe, this guy is just copying Timmy's.

Yeah - that was really nice when I was over in Europe. The ol' family restaurant always had GST included, right from when it was first introduced.

And I happened on this article through a blog post of someone talking about the awesome things in Paris.

Yes, yes, yes. It is good that North America starts realizing that for this particular thing, the rest-of-the-world system is much better. Have everything included in the original price. Duh! This is what all businesses should do, not only restaurants. (Cue to phone companies and airlines)
