May 16 2012 - Lunch Beat: Club through lunch break

May 17, 2012 15:50

Lunch Beat is a concept that started out in Sweden in June 2010 and has changed the way Europeans spend their lunch hour.

If your five day routine is getting to you, here's an idea. Spice your lunch hour up by heading to a club.

Well, at least that's how the Swedes do it!

Instead of taking leisure walks or sitting around in cafés, the people of Sweden redefined lunch breaks by using their hour to dance their workday blues away.

The Concept

The concept of Lunch Beat came about in a bid to combine work and dance.

The very first event took place in an underground garage in Stockholm. It drew in a crowd of 14 people and through word-of-mouth, it has now become a huge phenomenon.

Today, Lunch Beat events are held all across Europe, attracting thousands of people to dance their stress away during their lunch hour.

The concept was even covered by international media such as “The Oprah Blog” and “USA Today”.

It may seem rather strange to gather in one area and dance during in the middle of a work day but many people appreciate the ability to listen to loud club music, dance with their work buddies and let loose for an hour.

Lunch Beat may sound exactly like a nightclub experience but there is one difference, there is no ALCOHOL. You do get a take-away meal though so no one goes back to work hungry.

The Next Level

The team behind Lunch Beat is looking to take the concept further by using dance as a global language to connect people all over the world.

On May 31st 2012, 15 cities all over Europe will be taking part in the most massive Lunch Beat session ever. The simultaneous events will be digitally live streamed and will show how the language of dance unifies people, no matter the location.

Lunch Beat Singapore?

I think it’s a great idea to introduce the Lunch Beat concept here on our little island.

Most of us spend our lunch hour reserving seats with tissue packets and joining endless queues to purchase our food at Hawker Centres. Singaporeans deserve more than that.

Perhaps dancing for an hour is just what we need and an added bonus is that dancing can help you stay in shape, so you can skip going to the gym after work.

Lunch Beat can be set up anywhere and by anyone. You just need to know what the rules are and adhere to them.

In fact, if you are interested in holding a Lunch Beat event, you can take a look at their website and look under “Manifesto” for the rules and guidelines.

The first rule of Lunch Beat, apparently, is that you must dance. The next important rule is that you cannot talk about work during the event.

Those are rules I can definitely live by.

The Whether Girl’s verdict on dancing through lunch:

I say it’s time we follow our European counterparts and start enjoying life.

Dancing at noon may seem impractical but it may serve as a good way to re-energize our mind and body. I might start blasting Madonna in the office during lunch hour and start dancing. What do you think?
