Uffington horse

It would be lovely if some of you could help me with this. Does anyone of you know whether there arefolktales or nursery-rhymes or songs regarding the Uffington horse or any of the other white hill horses in England ( Read more... )

The Wiltshire horses - similar tales about the figures moving at night are told about other chalk drawings around the country.
Note: Uffington is often listed with the Wiltshire horses, but traditionally it was in Berkshire. It's now in Oxfordshire. And yes, it is fairly deserted unless there are lots of walkers out on a sunny day.

Uffington is on rolling chalk downs - farmland for miles and miles with small villages at the foot of the hills. Geographically it's not far from Wayland's Smithy, Avebury and Stonehenge, so to me it is part of that same mystical landscape. I've never been convinced it is a horse. It's head doesn't seem long enough and it has whiskers. I think it is a cat!

Thank you so much for all the info. I'd understood the NT were going to put up a fence to protect the horse.

I do hope your son is doing all right!
