Really odd feedback...

I am at somewhat of a loss. Up until this point, my fanfic has generally received what I consider good feedback or comments on stories. However, my the crossover story has now earned two comments that left me in the position of not being sure how to react.

The first one: so, if a person leaves a comment stating they didn't like my characterization ( Read more... )

Actually I really like your crossover (it's the HP/SGA one, right?). BUT (yeah, it's a big but), I'm also frustrated by the negligence I perceive in the writing of it: misspelled words (ex, you typed "causal" I/o "casual"), missing prepositions, and similar road bumps that detract from the flow of the story. I don't think I've ever encountered so many in other stories of yours.

I'm not even a fan of Draco/Harry yet appreciate the confusion of Draco crossing over (ha! does that make it a double-crossover) and dealing with a Harry who isn't his (er, not his his or at least not yet). Or a quantum mirror existing at Hogwarts, etc., etc. You know … cool stuff! And I would really like to know what happens next.

If I might offer a suggestion, the best way to proofread is to read each chapter OUT LOUD. While your eye may be tempted to race ahead (and miss errors), your mouth won't be as cooperative.

Ugh, I hate when I miss typos and mistakes. Honestly, I typically have a beta, but I had four different people offer to beta this for me and then just... not ever reply. I am guessing it was because it's so huge.

I'm glad you have enjoyed the story anyway.

> Someone left a comment pointing out every time this character attempted to hit or did hit her two friends and then said this abuser should not be allowed to come to Atlantis, that she was a bully and think about if it was a male character who did that.

Whoa... There's a HUGE difference between two friends talking, one doing something stupid, and the other bopping them on the head/arm/etc, and a bully. I mean hell - look at John and Rodney when they were being held captured by the Replicators. Rodney pushed his fingers against John's head to prove he/they were real, and John thwapped him in the leg. That's not being a bully. John being Rodney's friend and non-verbally saying, "Stop it, you idiot!"

I am fully willing to admit this character is rough with her male friends, but truly not with an intent to bully. Both of them know she's capable of giving them a smack if they do something stupid or annoying, but... eh. It's a thing that sometimes friends do. At least the friends I had at that same age.

It's always hard to know how to process that kind of feedback. I still don't have a good answer for that.

Not to mention, boys good-naturedly punch and hit each other all the time and are never labeled it as "abusers".

There's definitely a double standard going on here.

Yeah, that's a thing too. I tell you, in my head canon for these three, Rob has dumped a full bucket of water on Gracie's head, and she punched him and gave him a black eye, and her mom yelled and grounded her and Harry laughed so hard he fell over. Then Rob punched him an left a huge bruise on his arm.

The very next day, they were back tromping through the forest.

We moved around a lot growing up, so my brother was often the only person I knew in town. So we are pretty close, and we had a relationship like that - he once took marker and drew on my face as I slept, so I beat him up.

Maybe the comment was from someone who'd never had any male friends. Actually, some of mine would probably go "Ow!" and pretend to cry ...

I guess we all have different experiences.
