Table Daniel lay on the grass, which was still a little damp from the sprinkler that the other foster kids had been playing in during the day. Vin was tucked in closely at his side as they stared up at the night sky.
“Did you know that the stars had stories?” Daniel asked softly, so as not to disturb their peace. Daniel felt Vin shift so that he could look at Daniel as he spoke and couldn’t help but smile. Vin may not have much to say, but Daniel knew that, despite what Vin’s teachers thought, the boy was exceptionally bright and alert and that he listened attentively. When given half a chance Vin absorbed knowledge at a rate which surprised even Daniel.
“See those four bright stars in a square there?” Daniel asked. He waited for Vin’s nod. “That’s Hercules. He’s holding a club, see? He was a demigod. That means half mortal, half god. He’s the greatest of all heroes. No matter what was thrown at him he always managed to survive, to thrive even.”
“Like you?”
Daniel was surprised, and a little uncomfortable, at the comparison.
“I guess,” he replied, before he ruffled Vin’s hair. “But I think he’s more like you, since he got into a lot of fights protecting those who couldn’t defend themselves.” Daniel lightly touched the bruise on Vin’s cheek for emphasis. Vin shrugged, a subtle shift of shoulders against Daniel’s side.
“I don’t back down from bullies,” he told Daniel, determination and stubbornness clear in his voice and etched in the tense muscles of his shoulders. Daniel smiled, careful not to let Vin see because the boy would take it the wrong way.
“Precisely.”
The lay silently for a long while, Daniel waiting for Vin to relax once more.
“Tell me more.”
“See the shape that almost looks like a teapot? The cluster of stars next to it is a bow. The Greeks called that constellation Sagittarius, but the Babylonians called it Enkidu. He was a wild, untameable man but Gilgamesh taught him to be civilised. The Babylonians represented Gilgamesh with Orion, but you can’t see that this time of year. After that Enkidu was Gilgamesh’s faithful companion. Together they fought monsters and gods.”
“Guess that’s like me and you,” Vin said with a giggle. Daniel grinned.
“I don’t think you’ll ever be civilised, kid,” he replied. “And I’m not interested in immortality.”
Daniel ruffled Vin’s hair again and Vin slapped his hand away but did nothing to fix his hair when Daniel’s hand settled on his shoulder once more. Vin didn’t have a lot of experience with family, he only had a few memories of his mother and his father had died before Vin had really gotten to know him. While they might not be blood family, he figured that he and Daniel were brothers in all the ways that counted.
“You can always see the Great Bear and the Little Bear, no matter what time of year it is. The Great Bear is Callisto and the Little Bear is Arcas, her son. When they were turned into bears Zeus placed them in the sky. They’re in the same sky all year around. Even though she couldn’t look after him on Earth she never loses sight of him,” Daniel told Vin as he watched the younger boy rather than the night sky. He ached for all that he had lost and knew that Vin did too, but this was something he could give Vin. Vin traced what he could see of the Great Bear with his fingertip and thought of his own mother.
“See that star there,” Daniel said, dragging his gaze back to the sky and pointing. Vin followed his arm and nodded. “That’s Polaris, the North Star. It’s the tail of the Little Bear. It never changes, so no matter how lost you are you can always find your way.”
Vin knew that Daniel was leaving the next day for university and he wondered which star pointed there.
