I've always wrinkled my nose at AU's. Not that I think the writing is bad or I have an issue with the author's.. but when a character is a character for a reason..
I've had this argument with Meeks oodles of times.

Arthur fails to be "ARTHUR" if he isn't brought up around and in the same conditions as Canon.

Same with Merlin.

*shrug*

But I can see the allure of putting them in different scenarios.
And OMG... mob boys would be sweeeeeeeeeeeet.
