I've been thinking over what I've learned in the past few years. The most important idea of all is (gender, class, race, age) privilege. It is also one of the most challenging ideas I've ever encountered if I am determined to oppose it. Much of the challenge comes from the fact that privilege is largely imparted on a person as a result of ( Read more... )

Pacifism as Pathology and How Non-Violence Protects the State might be worth checking out. Or not, hehe.

Glad you’re into diversity of tactics, though.

Hmm, two people in my house were similarly ill on Tuesday.

I've read both, and they are significant reasons why I don't believe it is right for me to tell anyone else (especially those who directly experience oppression) what tactics they should use to free themselves from it. You can read that as a criticism of Churchill and Gelderloos as well.

say hi to franny for me. she was my favourite...

i've always felt it good to balance Pacifism as Pathology with this pamphlet entitled You Can't Blow Up a Social Relationship: The Anarchist Case Against Terrorism which was written by an anonymous group of australians in the seventies about issues they were then facing.

neither are from a pacifist position, and both have some significant weaknesses IMO, but anyway...

probably my favourite living pacifist writer is staughton lynd, are you familiar with him?

I saved the text of the pamphlet and will read it soon. I've heard of Staughton Lynd - but not read anything by him. Thanks for the suggestions.

What is it about Francis that made her your favourite character? That she was the only character with strength and guts?

Personally - I found James the most interesting - especially as a weak and flawed character destroying his family while trying to maintain an illusion of happiness/normality.
