I have had incredibly lucky pregnancies. I can't remember strangers ever patting my belly, and I certainly never heard things like that.
Pregnant women + guns is a bad idea. Also avoid communities like pregnant or naturalbirth. Large groups of hormonal women, with or without guns, are not pleasant.
I think I just happen to work with a lot of well-intentioned but incredibly clueless people. And yes, definitely avoiding the large gatherings of pregnant ladies on the internet. Though the one that made me the maddest was the one on another discussion forum who thought that women who complained about morning sickness were just looking for attention and not really feeling poorly at all. She said something along the lines of "you should just get over and decide to be happy instead." If I could have reached through the internet and strangled anyone, it would have been her.
It's so nice to be clueless and believe you know everything. It's nicer when you grow up and look back and say, "Wow, I was an idiot." Hopefully that will happen some day to this woman.
A woman I work with lost twenty pounds her first trimester, and had to be hospitalized to stay hydrated, her morning sickness was that bad. When I got morning sickness with Little Cat Z, I kept that in mind. It didn't make me feel any better, but I knew it could be so much worse than it was. That made it bearable, at least.
