Pool or no pool... playing what if?

My mother's swimming pool has developed another leak. We suspect it is in the piping. I suspect the pipe that runs to the circulation nozzle near the deep end step since the water stopped leaking out of the pool just below that point & the concrete has been slipping away from the pool at that location. (It's about an inch away from where it was ( Read more... )

Yes, that grass is MUCH greener. I had started with cloning someof the grass in the upper right to fill in the pool area, but I was impatient so I used the grass texture fill instead. How did you do that so quickly?

seems like such a shame to completely fill a space like that in..Especially given the tiled look of the sides. How about a little jackhammering of the edge on the shallow end, then put in some nice stepping stones and have yourself a nice sunken area.. perhaps with a firepit? or a nice fountain?

I can imagine a great many barbecues in such a sunken space.. with friends in chairs below the old pool edge.. the shelter from the wind could make for an extended bbq season, and with a little creativity, a tarp strung across the top could make a nice shelter for open air campouts.

Pardon the crudity of my model, I didn't have time to paint it or build it to scale.

keep in mind, you will very probably to destroy the bottom of the pool anyways.. because the last thing you want is to start collecting rainwater in the basin. Your little backyardlet could be muddy far into the late spring.

It's not all that crude a pic.

That said, it's known if we fill in the pool we'd have to punch a hole in the bottom or lest risk the pool area popping up with differing ground water pressures.

We've had a sunken garden idea proposed to us before. While I thank you appreciating the tile work & trying to come up with an idea that would save it --we've not felt drawn to the sunken garden idea because of the falling hazard of having that big of a hole out there. [The deep end (without partial fill) where you have the firepit is 9 feet deep.] Also, it is a good point that the area could fill with water & become a pond in the winter if drainage was not paid very close attention.

Ooo, please keep posting about the decision and (if it happens) the demolition/yard-filling process. I'd be very interested in how it goes.

Rob and I have been considering doing the same to our pool for years. We figure that with the expense of running the ancient filter pumps, and the expense of demolition and fill, the act of killing the pool would pay for itself in five years. But we're short on cash.
