Going without

I make a point of giving something up for Lent every year.  I'm not Catholic, but I respect the practice of voluntarily doing without something that I enjoy.  I don't assign any spiritual value to my fast instead considering it an exercise of character: recognizing that I can do without whatever I'm giving up, acknowledging that it's something that ( Read more... )

You also have the privilege of cheat days, few consequences of going off-diet or quitting altogether, and knowing it's all temporary. If you don't have the money for something you don't have the money for it. Outside of stealing there is no cheat. If you spend that money on crap there is no do-over of getting better food later on. That money's gone.

Also, it would have been nice for you to tell your wife you'd have gone off the diet if it harmed your health.

Adjusting caffeine intake too drastically in in too short a period begets headaches. When I started cutting back on the high fructose corn syrup, it seriously reduced my caffeine intake.

The resulting headache was almost audible it was so bad.
