Summary: Sometimes the details get away from them.
The sight that greeted Ianto upon entering the Harkness mansion’s basement/garage wasn’t all that dissimilar to some hentai that Ianto’s friend Malcolm had discovered during his time at uni and felt compelled to share. Ianto rolled his eyes. When you found your employer in a compromising position with five different mechanical arms, you ought to start looking for another PA position.
Jack was characteristically shameless. “Ah, Ianto. You couldn’t give me a hand, here, could you?”
Ianto put the drinks tray down and started forward, folding his arms. “If I do this, I want your word that there will be no more jokes about Alfred, Batman -”
“Or Robin.” Jack guessed, biting his lip. He took a moment to re-consider his position, straining against the arm that was holding his right arm before he sighed in defeat.
“No more Batman jokes.” He agreed.
Ianto smiled and unfolded his arms, giving the partially dissembled suit a quick once over. “Well, you’ve been to get the helmet off, that’s something.” Ianto remarked, making a few quick adjustments to the suit’s breastplate, allowing the arms to remove it smoothly. Now unhindered the other arms began to divest him, the fragments of the metal suit now coming away without fuss.
“If I ever suggest you become my sidekick, Ianto, turn me down in the strongest possible terms.” said Jack, allowing the arms to set him down, de-suited. “This superhero thing is not what it’s cracked up to be.”
Ianto made a sympathetic noise before turning back to the worktop where he’d left Jack’s glass of chilled sparkling water, not bothering to start an argument on whether this was a Robin reference.
“Even without all that secret-identity crap and the fact when I’m late people actually know I’m saving lives, I still get chewed out for it! And I don’t have the time to work the superhero sex appeal angle - I haven’t been able to milk that at all!” He took the glass and raised it in a quick salute to Ianto and gulped, setting the glass back on Ianto’s tray to give him the grin. “Unless of course you have finally decided to make me the happiest man alive.”
Ianto gave him a look. “As I believe I mentioned the last time you proposed, I couldn’t jump into marriage so hastily.”
Jack eyebrow shot up. “Hardly hasty! I’ve employed you, what? Three years, now?”
“Just over four and a bit.” said Ianto “However, if you’ll recall, we had to cancel our first date back sometime in 2006 and haven’t be able to re-schedule.”
“What about that time - I bought you a tequila sunrise!” Jack protested.
“You were going to buy me a tequila sunrise, and then you got - distracted.” said Ianto with a cough.
Jack frowned. “Wait, this wasn’t that time with Christina - I told you that was back when we young, we’re just friends now. Well, except for that time, Christmas, 2007, but we were in a ski lodge and there was a fire -”
“Iron man related business.” said Ianto
“Ah. Right.” Jack pulled an apologetic face and took up his glass again. “Have I apologised for that?”
“Plenty,” said Ianto with a smile. “Although, I would prefer if you could free up a window. So we could actually have that first date.”
“Sounds like a plan.” said Jack, smiling back. “And who knows? There could be other dates.”
“Might even get around to getting engaged.” said Ianto, tilting his head at Jack.
“I’d like that.” said Jack, licking his lips. “Would take the pressure off the playboy thing.”
“It would be nice to have a break from all that, wouldn’t it?” said Ianto, tucking the drinks tray under his arm. “I’m on a first name basis with the people at the dry cleaning place.”
“Then it’s settled!” said Jack, handing Ianto the glass, still half full. “Make a window in the diary.”
“What day?” Ianto asked
“Any day you want - you pick what we do, where we go, whatever you want, I’ll go along with it.”
“What, anything?” asked Ianto as Jack passed him.
Jack spun around and gave him a kiss. “Anything.”
A slow grin spread across Ianto’s face. “I’m only after you for the suit.” He told Jack.
Jack paused in the doorway and grinned back. “I love you too.”
Ianto waited until he had disappeared upstairs before breaking out the Blackberry and clearing a Wednesday in the diary and going online to book tickets, downing the rest of Jack’s sparkling water.
A/N: This crossover is with the movie Iron man, because I adored the dynamic they captured between Tony and Pepper. Hopefully I've caught something like it. Let me know what you think.
