I wouldn't know what to do---there's martial law in effect in some areas; where would you go to help? Where would they need help? Is there any place that is actually organizing such efforts?

I've donated, but if I could do anything physically I would...

Lifted [mostly] from jessicamelusine, For non-locals, your area may be looking for volunteers to go to LA/MI; if you have the time and the health, please check with your local Red Cross office.
Email from the local Red Cross:

We need volunteers to deploy immediately for a 3 week assignment who have no medical restrictions. If you meet these qualifications, please call me.

EDIT: Apparently, they ask about medication. They do not want to send you if you use SSRIs and other mood-altering meds or if you take meds that require refrigeration. They will most likely be sending volunteers for months, so there may be other chances after this first wave.

However, they are also looking for volunteers to work with the Response Center in Falls Church to distribute info about recovery and presumably help people out; talk to Sally Herfield at 703-206-6829.
I'm tempted to call, but I doubt that I could swing a three week ( ... )

Baton Rouge is headquarters for all relief efforts in LA. Don't know about MS or AL. But right now FEMA and Red Cross are organizing volunteers in Baton Rouge. I've been investigating b/c I want to be there too. You'd have to drive though as the airports are not open yet.
