I blame John Woo. Hong Kong John Woo, before he went to Hollywood and lost his powers.
If you've never seen Hard Boiled, you really must. The climactic sequence wherein he shoots his way out of a hospital while carrying a baby has to be seen to be believed. All of the movies he made with Woo are worth seeing, but that and The Killer are widely considered the two best. (Although, if hyper-balletic violence ain't your thang, be advised that Zack Snyder could've learned a thing or two from watching Woo's work.)
