“Anthony, Ian has loved you since the sixth grade. When he came home and said he was in love with his lab partner, I said, “What’s her name?” He told me, looking me straight in the eye, ‘Mom. It’s a boy. His name is Anthony.’ When he described you, you sounded perfect. The first time I met you, I knew that you were the perfect person for my baby. But you never seemed to return his adoration. You seemed to just want to be friends. When you started dating that Kalel girl, I knew that Ian wouldn’t be happy. Although Ian might not show it, he is floating on air right now, I will guarantee it.” Mrs. Hecox giggled like a schoolgirl.
“I’m sorry to have been so aloof, but I have returned Ian’s love since our first day. I came here today to ask you a very important question, and I am going to ask that you fully respect this.”
“Of course, Anthony.”
“Ian is very devoted to you, ma’am. And he won’t do anything you don’t approve of. So, I want to ask you for your blessing. I want to ask for Ian’s hand in marriage.”
“You have my blessing.” She said immediately with no hesitation. His dad merely nodded.
“Thank you. I have to… prepare.”
Ian’s mom stood up, held her arms open. She had been my mom, since my mom had died about five years ago. I ran to her for maternal help, but right now, when I would have been telling my mom, I was content to tell Mrs. Hecox.
“You have been there for Ian, and you have been a second son to us. Now you can be a son in law. You have been, are, and always will be welcome in the family.”
Where was Anthony? He had been gone for two and a half hours. He had left, stuttering out some excuse about picking up mail.
While I was fretting in the living room, worrying that he had gotten in a car accident or something, he walked in with several mail bins.
“How ‘bout filming Mail time with Smosh, Ian?” He had a weird look in his eyes, a nervous, fluttery one. He kept patting down his jacket pocket, but I couldn’t see anything in it. It was blocked by all the mail.
“Is it really Mail-day?”
“No, but let’s get ahead.”
“Alright…I’ll go get the tripod.”
I skipped. I don’t know why.
I filmed him dumping out the mail.
We merrily went through mail, occasionally interjecting with cries of SWEET! Or Awesome! Sometimes, we made little figurines fight. He handed me a little black box.
“Ian, it’s for you.”
“Did another fan girl send me a ring?”
He said nothing, watched my face as I opened it. My jaw dropped open, as I saw the contents.
After I got the Hecoxes’ approval I went jewelry shopping. The man behind the counter showed me to the diamond rings, “For a special lady.” He expected me to be marrying a girl, but I told him I was looking for engagement bands for my boyfriend. He blinked, unfazed, and showed me the platinum bands. I saw one that could be engraved with names, dates, or sayings.
“I want this one.” I told him. When I signed the check, he handed me an engravement order. I couldn’t wait to see Ian’s face. I hoped he wouldn’t turn me down. But there was the possibility. The butterflies were getting pissed at me, because I was making myself nervous more than usual. While Ian was finding the tripod, I told the fans I was proposing to Ian today. He didn’t know.
Ian’s bottom lip quivered, his eyes, his beautiful eyes, sparkled with tears of joy.
I stood up, walked across the room, got down on one knee in front of him. I took the box. He stood up, and I took his left hand.
“Ian Hecox, I love you. You are my soul mate. I love you forever and always. You are my best friend, my brother, my lover. Will you marry me?”
“Yes. Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. Anthony, I love you more than life, more than Smosh even, I love you, I love you, and I love you.”
I put the ring on his fourth finger. It fit perfectly, even though I had no idea what ring size Ian was.
I stood up. Holding my arms open, I said, “Ian…this is perfect. We’ve got each other; we’ve got Smosh, Forever and Always.”
This was perfect. I was engaged to be married to my best friend, my Anthony. We were in love. Later, when we were in bed, Anthony squeezed me to his chest, sleeping contentedly. I took off my ring, twirled it in my hands. I saw something engraved inside.
