It never fails. There is always an argument at least once a month in which someone deems it improper to use the term "Eskimo" and demands that I say "Inuit" instead ( Read more... )

Some people swear that it was a slang word for "raw meat eater" or something of the like, but that origin was never found.

As an alaskan, I feel compelled to point out that there are also athabaskans, inupiat, and gu'chin. All of whom are eskimos.

Tell whoever is being wrongly PC to lick it.

I should also point out that culturally, 'eskimo' isn't offensive, and would really only be so in Canada, where the inuit are pretty pissy about being identified as singularly aboriginal.

In Alaska, as you said, 'Eskimo' = 'member of aboriginal arctic tribe.'

In textbooks it now says to say Inuit, so that's probably where people get it from.
