Notes: Something I wrote a couple of years ago.
He cries every night, thinking about him. Nothing tangible, no tears or the coveted stones that they would turn into, no sobs racking his body; just a tightening in his chest that aches and throbs, and a pain in his forehead that he wishes was caused by the Jagan.
He misses the old days, sometimes. The days before he had to contend with such emotional turmoil, the days when he didn't have to work so hard just to keep up a mask of indifference. The days when he was alone. The days before the oaf, the days before the fox.
The days before the detective.
He remembers, even now, the smile on Yuusuke's face, but even moreso the words he spoke back at Maze Castle.
"I trust you."
His world had shattered with those words.
He doesn't know when the lines between friendship and love blurred. He isn’t even sure he knows exactly when he stopped thinking of Yuusuke as an enemy and instead looked at him as a friend. (He tries to convince himself that he still will exact revenge on Yuusuke one day, when he least expects it. He tries, but it never works.)
Yuusuke returns his friendship.
Yuusuke would trust him with his life.
But Yuusuke doesn't love him.
And his unrequited love is what really kills Hiei inside.
