She broke up with him... both verbally, and, after having somehow had gone back on that tried to mind-fuck him (whether or not intentionally)...

This is Gavin making the decision for her, since she's not gonna be responsible or mature enough to do so herself.

I would say on some level, this is him breaking up with her and letting go. Personally, I think it's the healthy way to go. Not let himself get yanked around by her and such.
