It's behind a cut in case you're apolitical, or a Republican )

While I am in agreement that McCain/Palin would be a disaster, I do have a few quibbles.

1) I kind of object to the "serially pregnant" part. Frankly, I'd be perfectly happy to vote for a woman with five children, so long as she was otherwise qualified. The problem isn't that she's had that many children, it's that she's trying to run on that as a qualification.

2) "We might as well all be Amish." Au contraire. The Amish a) at least know how to make things work without technology, and b) practice tolerance, forgiveness, and nonviolence.

3) The media SAY women will be drawn to Palin, because it fits their simplistic narratives and they want it to be true. The fact is, the only women she's won over are Republicans (which, see above); Democratic and independent women voters don't like her. She's actually a lot less popular with women than with men. But the media don't want to say that, because they're confused about which gender actually thinks with their reproductive organs. ;P

I have no issue with the size of a particular candidate's family. I think that the issue being raised here is indeed that the fact that she's a mother of five is somehow supposed to be a qualification for the presidency, and as far as I'm concerned, there's light-years of difference between raising kids and shepherding the country. If she can successfully care for 5 billion or so children at once, that MIGHT count as a qualification. It's a moot point, so I really wish everybody would get off it, on both sides.

I personally know two women who are intending to vote McCain simply by virtue of the fact that that means that they're voting for the side that'll put a woman into the VP office. They're stated expressly that intent to me. Face to face.

Exactly.

Well, I suppose there have to be some of them, just like there were Hillary supporters going for McCain before he picked Palin. But the polls show a net loss for McCain among non-Republican women after he picked her, which gives me some hope for my gender.

I think the woman came off as cataclysmically stupid during the debate with Biden, however, Biden did himself no favors by seeming like he repeatedly had to force himself not to get visibly angry with Palin. The people saying that Palin did better than they expected really irritate. If this is better than they expected, then how low were their expectations, precisely?

I wasn't a Hilary supporter, but I'd vote for her a million times over before I'd ever once vote for a ticket with that nitwit Palin involved.

Awesome essay! I personally have never understood why many of my fellow citizens prefer to vote for the folksy, not-too-bright seeming candidates who they think they can "relate to" rather than the ones who seem like they understand way more than the average Joe. I want someone smarter than me running the show!!

Just on case you missed SNL's brilliant and hilarious take on the VP debate, here it is, enjoy!

I think that's what irritates me the most, that people are stupid enough to want someone running the country who's just like them. Unless you're a goddamned licence-carrying genius, I don't think you should want someone just like you in charge. I think our leaders should be the best of us, no the rest of us.

Exactly. Plus, the thing I LIKE about Obama that the McCain campaign keeps trying to paint as a negative is that he actually tries to gather facts and understand a situation before making a decision about it. Seems to me that the era of kneejerk reactions and shoot first, ask questions later style of governing that we've all endured for the past eight years hasn't been very productive.

I think McCain is kinda losing it and will pretty much spout any crap he thinks will get him elected--it's his last chance. And Palin doesn't seem to be able to say anything but stale old right wing talking points. I really wished during the debate that Biden had pointed out that Clinton raised taxes on the wealthy and it didn't lead to job loss...

I've always found it funny, watching a Republican with their back tot he wall. McCain and Zombie Barbie are unloading any old thing, regardless of truth, to see if they can make Obama and Biden look like liars, and you can see the barely controlled anger on Biden's face every time. You can tell Joe Biden wants to just run around punching people.

I don't think insulting people is a good way to convince those on the fence, honestly.

I agree with the idea that Obama is far better qualified, and in my mind, it's not even a contest. But the same could be said about the second Bush "election"*... and righteous indignation didn't do much to help the Dems then.

*in quotes because neither election was actually decided without fraud on the part of the GOP, but, hey.

That'd be why I tend not to talk about politics. I feel passionate about it, and really anyone who fails to see the logic of the Democratic side of the table tends to inflame the less-than-polite part of my personality. I can't see the right's perspective. It's impossible to get my head that far up my ass.

Hon, you live!

Have you seen P. Diddy's response to Sarah Palin? I'm not a huge fan of P. Diddy, but his Blair Witch freak out here is priceless:

I'M ALIIIIIVE AND SO ARE YOUUU.

Hey, doll. I'm around, yes. Just not as talkative as usual. My home situation is irritating me beyond the capacity for rational thought, and it's making me a little withdrawn, mostly from lack of anything approaching privacy in my house these days.

Other than that, I'm good, really. And I almost typed "goon" instead of good. Ironic? You make the call.

Wasn't hiding.

Left the computer to handle a little something, and when I came back, it was being taken up by someone who irritated the holy motherfuck out of me when I asked him to give the computer back.

People who are crashing on the couch and yet act like the whole house is theirs to do whatever they want should be drug out into the street and chopped up with a hatchet, then have the parts fed to wild dogs.
