I have a free account so I only get notifications when someone adds me. The only way for me to know if someone has de-friended me is to either constantly check my profile (not likely) or visit http://joule.marnanel.org/ on occasion.
I have a permanent account, but I don't get unfriending (or friending) notifications. I must have turned them off somewhere. Maybe I'm better off being ignorant.
Ahh- there's not worry! My sarcasm filter is not dialed up high enough to break the threshhold :)
I was more thinking when you get the notification e-mail from LJ, it looks *exactly* like this- it's basically set up for retribution!
The person(s) who usually end up taking me off the ubiquitously named 'friends' list either are trimming back, have quit LJ, or (oddly, as in this case) 'removing friends who don't post enough' which is weird. cause people who don't post you don't see- unless you're just cleaning up your list of 600+ friends to get it down to something reasonable.
It's all good- I never take those notices personally. It's just LiveJournal.
Okay- that's a lie *:) But after the initial 10 seconds of feeling rejected, *then* I don't take it personally.

I keep my friends list down because I post things to LJ that I think is marginally personal and I don't want everyone on the internet to know.
