So ... I went to see Star Trek, courtesy a short term loan from
annalina_maire and a 10:15 showing rather than a midnight release. We were joined by her boyo, her sister and date, her mother,
mortalfate,
angeldess and
mtfierce (who sat a row back so I missed her snark, though I could tell it was there).
OMFG!
I should've known to expect this sort of thing from J.J. Abrams (Lost's master and bitch all at once), but I really didn't. The alternate reality thing actually only got leaked to me about a week in advance and that, really, just made it all that more tempting.
Someone was saying ahead of time that JJ had gotten away with the one thing Paramount doesn't let anyone do ... and that's mess with canon. The truth of the matter, though, is that alternate reality is already canon. Can we say "Mirror, Mirror"?
The tag line all along has been that this isn't your father's Star Trek. The truth of the matter though is that it is very much my father's Star Trek. And mine and my grandparents. It may be modern and hip, but 1) there's already canon for alternate reality, 2) Nichelle Nichols herself already envisioned the romantic aspect between Uhura and Spock (and her skirt isn't any shorter than in the 70's version), 3) there's still Chekov's horrible accent and Scotty's AMAZING accent, 4) the Romulans are still the enemy, and 5) most importantly you DON'T lose the essence of ANY of the characters (complete with Kirk's need for gigolo time).
I will admit to a moment of hanging my head in shame ... partway into the movie when Spock is roughing up Kirk, my brain slashed ... I've never been able to slash Kirk and Spock before because part of my brain then visualizes Shatner & Nimoy (EWWWW), but now ... I may have to find new Kirk/Spock. {hangs head in shame some more}
I loved it! Woven throughout are tons and tons and tons of references that only a true Star Trek geek would follow. However, as Robert said, it made everything accessible to a modern generation. Afterwards our daughter looked up at us and said that she thought it could be her favorite movie ever. Robert pronounced her a Trekkie on the spot and then asked her what that meant. She said it was someone who was a fan of Star Trek. She makes me so proud some days. {grins} (Often for better reasons, but really, that makes her a fourth-gen Trekkie on my side of the family.)
ANYway, if you thought you were going to skip out on this and you have any love for ST: TOS, get thine ass to a theatre ASAP!
