We're here and the whole place is wonderful. There's a hammock out on the veranda of the house I'm staying at and next to it grows a tree of tart little mamones chinos. I love them already, for all that they're hard to eat. And a little further away there are great papaya and mango and orange trees. And we drove for about four or five hours through ( Read more... )

Are rambutans (or whatever they're called there) harder to eat than lychees? Because lychees are my favorite fruit to eat for the precise reason that they are a delicious fidget, what with peeling the skins off and all.

The outer skins are pretty easy to pick off, actually. The difficulty lies in eating the fruit which is fastened to a pit. You have to tear it off with your teeth, like you're eating the last little bit of a peach.

::shrugs:: I dunno- I've always just popped the whole thing in my mouth and spat out the seed. Sure, you then have a thing in your mouth 1 1/2" in diameter, but you and I both know that delicacy is for Classy Ladies, which we totally are not. also, there's the whole bit where there's an obvious seam to dig under and peel the fruit off the pit from.
