I have no experience w cats and this condition, but my mom had it. She was treated w the radioactive treatment you mentioned. She had to be on thyroid pills for the rest of her life. But it may be different in kitties.
Good luck!

Maybe you should think of it this way: if it was your thyroid, what would you do?

*nod* Which is why I've pretty much decided to go with the radioiodine treatment. ;)

We had two cats at once with it - unrelated so maybe due to diet. One responded well to the pills and lived to die much later of something else.
The other did not respond well to the pills; they made her ill. The ear cream version seemed to do nothing. By then she was old, weak and thin, and we didn't think she'd choose to spend weeks of her remaining life getting radiation therapy 3 hours away (the only spot then was in London Ontario). And there were no guarantees she'd respond to it either. So we let her stay with us without treatment, and go gently into that good night when ready (long before we were ready of course) as the kindest choice for her.

RIP Princess.

I'm so sorry to hear about Princess - that's very sad. :(

Thanks for sharing your story. I think I've decided to go with the radioiodine treatment, since it would give Morself the best, and most, quality of life.

My friend Monica (M.) is going through this with one of her cats at this very moment--she brough him home from the vet yesterday and is sorting out the radioactive kitty issues right now (including some misleading and ambiguous instructions she's getting resolved).

Oh - would you put me in touch with her, if you think she'd be open to talking about the process? I'm probably going to have Morsel boarded for the entire time for practical reasons (can't flush litter here). I hope her kitty recovers fully and is completely healed!
