Sometimes you "wake up" and realize the shitty things you have done, the shitty person you have been, and see the ruin left in its wake. You think back and can see why things fell apart and feel really bad about it and wish you could just go back to that moment or moments and have done the right or good thing, to have taken the high road. I know this is an old post - you may have worked through it by now. I just perused it 'cause you commented on Deb's LJ. . .

I think being able to look back and see what went wrong or that something did go wrong is what counts. Though someone or specific people may not forgive you - if they don't there are new avenues to pursue and in 5 years it may not matter. I've found myself at times wanting to "win someone back over" and then half way through the process realizing that it wasn't just me - but them too - and that they maybe weren't the best thing for me anyhow.

However in the case of family - that's a whole nother can of worms in another store in another state.

Time is the key to everything. Someone has to want you grow into a good person in order to see it if and when it takes place.
