Just a little log Al and I did after watching 2x10, "From Out of the Rain". Started with one offhand comment from Jack, and turned into some damn awesome dialogue.

Jack: You know what? I need a glass of water. 'anto, you want one, too? *gets up*
Ianto: I could use one, yes. ... if you don't mind.
Jack: Not at all. *goes out to the break room, comes back with a bottle of water and a carton of ice cream. also two spoons* Tadah.
Ianto: ::cracks a little grin:: Brilliant thought. The ice cream, I mean.
Jack: *grins and sits down next to him* Thought so too. Cherry chocolate chip?
Ianto: Sounds perfect.
Jack: Just like the company. *cracks it open*
Ianto: ::snorts, vaguely amused, and then:: I'd say so, yes.
Jack: Hey hey. Don't turn the conversation back around to me, 'anto Jones. *smirk. wink. waves his spoon at him*
Ianto: No? Why not? ::tries to swipe the spoon from him::
Jack: *makes a little strangled noise and yanks the spoon away* Hey. Mine.
Ianto: ::heh face:: Well, if you intend to keep hold of it ...
Jack: *holds out the other one? what. none of the spoons in Torchwood match and he likes some of them more than others*
Ianto: ::takes the other one from him:: Thank you.
Jack: Mmhm. *smiles and picks one of the chocolate bits out. and chocolate chip is a misnomer. they're like big flat chunks*
Ianto: ::digs in. will probably grab one of the chocolate bits here in a minute, but ... ice cream. yes. anyway:: ... Can I ask you something, Jack?
Jack: 'Course you can. *munch* Sup?
Ianto: Feeling a bit philosophical, so you'll have to bear with, but ... glass half full or half empty?
Ianto: ::proceeds to munch his ice cream::
Jack: .... People're lucky if the glass is there to begin with.
Ianto: ::arches his eyebrows:: How do you mean?
Jack: *looks down at the ice cream* We've got a pint of ice cream, right?
Ianto: ::nods:: We do.
Jack: So. Even though Owen probably snarfed the giant chunk that's missing from it .... you're still glad we've got it, right?
Ianto: ::cracks a little grin, but it's quick to fade into something more serious:: I am.
Jack: And even if it were nearly empty ... it'd mean that one of us, at one point or another, had some ice cream. Wouldn't that be better than it never having been here at all?
Ianto: So, you're saying most people don't see it like that. They don't stop and think that at least someone got the ice cream. They just whinge about how they didn't get any.
Jack: Not just that. *thinks* I'm saying ...... most people don't realize that there could have never even been any to begin with. That it's a priveledge.
Ianto: ... suppose I hadn't thought on it like that.
Jack: I hadn't for a long time, either.
Ianto: But clearly, you changed your mind, or we wouldn't be having this discussion.
Jack: *smiles* Clearly. *looks at him through the bottle of water. which is, indeed, full*
Ianto: ::offers him a slow smile::
Jack: *smiles back* Okay, Mr. Philosophical. *mouthful of ice cream. swallows it like that. brainfreeze? whassat* What do you think?
Ianto: ::takes another spoonful of ice cream and contemplates it as he talks, so he doesn't have to look at Jack:: I'm a pessimist's optimist. Or an optimist's pessimist. Whichever you fancy, doesn't change facts that my perception shifts from day to day. ::for example:: When I first came to Torchwood Three, from London, I thought nothing could ever be right with the world again. I thought ... ::well. that's beating a dead horse, so he leaves it at that:: But then there are days where we do right by the people in this city ... the people on this planet ... and I'm sort of a mind where good always triumphs over evil and the hero always gets the girl.
Jack: *reaches out and puts a hand to his arm. quietly* Yeah.... I kinda guessed. ... And I'm glad you have those kind of days, now. For the longest time, I was afraid you wouldn't.
Ianto: So did I. ::is silent for a moment, staring at his ice cream, before looking up:: And I never did thank you properly.
Jack: You're not allowed to thank me until you thank yourself.
Ianto: ::tilts his head, confused:: For what?
Jack: ... For giving yourself a chance. Whether you were aware of it, or not. A man can be given all the chances in the world, 'anto.... but he needs to take them first.
Ianto: ... I hadn't thought on that, either.
Jack: ... *amused* And again: neither had I, for a long time.
Ianto: ::laughs a little, quietly:: Well, I'm glad we both came to our senses, at any rate.
Jack: *smiles* Me too .... Not half as fun to eat ice cream with a pessimist.
