Question for the law students and lawyers on my flist

I was just thinking about my experiences with university and the gender divide. When I was studying my Bachelor of Multimedia, the males in the class clearly outnumbered the women. I expected that because I think IT is still a male dominated industry. But having been studying my Bachelor of Law going on three years now (only 18 months remaining in ( Read more... )

I'm currently in the last phase of my studies and I can say that in every class I took women were always in the majority. A professor remarked once that it was the complete opposite more than 20 years ago, so I suppose yes the gender divide is becoming level.
But not in all legal professions, the majority of lawyers in my country is male. It's a very male dominated world with it's own set of rules, especially the bigger law firms. I suppose there a a whole set of reasons for it, but I read recently that 56% of starting lawyers is female, so I guess that gap will be closed in time :)

It was almost exactly 50/50 at my large state-funded law school in the US. Percentage of women dropped after that to 38% by 2007 (reflecting a nationwide trend, they said), but then they started focusing on attracting women again, and it was back up to 50/50 by 2009.
