on the venerable hunter s.: just imagine if the man'd died of a drug overdose, or a hunting accident or something else dreadfully ironic like houdini's sucker-punch appendicitis or whats-his-face that went over Niagra twice in a barrel but died after slipping on a banana peel. I think the only entity that was even capable of taking Thompson out of this world was Thompson, deliberately by his own hand, with a gun -- and NOT Wild Turkey.

on guest-speaking-thumpers: nice to hear that a civil two-way conversation about the topic actually took place. I bring up PP here, and there's only two kind of people; those who agree with me, and those who instantly damn me and turn out for advocating anything remotely related to Choice.

regarding a previous post/comment: so you're only 20...if even half the things you write about are true, y'know, you must take a certain secret (or overt) pleasure in making even the most industrious and studious of your contemporaries look like half-wit slackers who can't handle working or playing nearly as hard.

EDIT: The aformentioned Bobby Leach only went over the Horseshoe falls of Niagara once, and it was an orange peel, not a banana peel that killed him. He was walking down a street in New Zealand, and fractured his leg in the fall (I don't know why each of the X-ref sites I checked were sure to mention New Zealand, but they sure were adamant about it). From the fracture he developed an infection and later a fatal case of gangrene. So depending on the depths to which one might apply the Hermetic cause-effect theory, an orange peel killed him. Man, I'm getting sloppy ( ... )

Have you ever walked in to a Southern Baptist church wearing a Decide shirt?

Nope. That was an original idea as of a few hours ago.
I might have to try that now.

I went to my friends' Southern Baptist church and refused to wear my shoes inside on account of it being holy ground...and cited, "Remove your shoes. You're on Holy Ground" as God's real first commandment to Moses and called them all heretics. That was fun. They cited health code. I told them that God's law is higher than man's law. It was a fun debate. I was quite amused.

"sorry for the mess" - I think that's nice

as for hunter s thompson: (I've already said this a bunch), but I still think he wasn't the suicidin' type, while he supposedly was very much the get-fucked-up-and-play-with-firearms type

See, initially I didn't think Gonzo the suicidin' type, but then I thought about it, and...he was writing sports commentary. I'd probably kill myself if I went from Hunter S. Thompson to sports commentator in my lifetime.

If I read someone's suicide note, and it said "Sorry for the mess," it would totally take the edge off of mopping up his/her brains. Suicide/homicide clean up would probably be one of the worst jobs in the world.

except for the fact that he started out writing sports commentary, and he obviously enjoyed it much more now than when he started

I don't know if you'd been following his columns in the last few years, but the majority of them did not stick strictly to sports in content, though they often used sports to springboard into politics

and when they were about sports, they were usually about his gambling exploits

there is every indication (to me, at least) that his column kept him alive

and I agree with you about the cleaning up part - it would be horrible, especially if you had lost someone close, and I would take a note that said that completely seriously

He started out writing sports commentary?
I had no idea.
That's nuts!

And no, I didn't follow his sports commentary. I don't care much for sports, myself.
