On creativity

So a friend asked me about writing and creativity. Here is the question and my reply:

Q: I've been stuck in a musical rut for a long time now. Sure, a riff here and there that I like, but I just can't seem to write anything that I truely like or enjoy playing. Do you ever get in this kind of a creative rut? If so what do you do to get out of it?

A: I guess my advice would be to absorb as much as possible. Learn a whole bunch of new songs, maybe figure out some lick you always thought was really cool but never learned. Learn and analyze new song forms. Why does this song work when it's so long? This one when it's so short? Give yourself an objective with limits: write a song with one note consistent throughout the chords changes. Combine styles: Hendrix-style guitar over a JayZ style beat.

What do you think? Do you have any go-to solutions for sparking creativity? What about non-musical arts?
