It's terrible, and lends itself to a sort of temptation to write them going off into the sunset. The other reason I play him less is that so many of the characters he knew seem to have vanished, which leaves him hanging a bit. He's still living at Leela's, and she hardly even posts on her real journal anymore, life simply got busy.
That's true. I'm almost scared of doing something like that with Mel, though. And like what happened with Thorn, a lot of Mel's friends have left too, so... yeah. We can angst at each other a bit. Or I can draw on you in Sharpie when you're not looking and give you whiskers.
I always feel slightly childish about writing fan fiction, too. Like, don't I have something better to do than write about characters and a setting that someone else created? That and it reminds me of when I was a child, writing fan fiction (except I didn't call it that because I didn't know what that term was).
And yet, I've written a proper novel through NaNoWriMo, and I can't seem to even get anyone to take a look at it. It's easier for people to pick up something shorter where they might already know the characters, I suppose. I've got two Shadow fan fiction pieces in the works, now.
