I rarely have the same reaction to episodes as the rest of fandom, and I wasn't expecting this time to be any different. I came away from "The End of Time, Part I" thinking WTF!!! and was delighted to find that everyone else was too. Well, not really "delighted" - just comforted that I'm not the odd woman out this time. But as I surfed thought Live Journal, Digital Spy, etc. . . I discovered something amusing: EVERYONE is saying WTF? but rarely over the same parts. Everyone seems to have about half a dozen scenes that they loved and were not amused by the rest. So apparently, all of it was liked by different people, but no one enjoyed it in it's entirety. Here's my likes and dislikes:
The good:
-Wilf is special. Well, we already knew that! But Wilf is the only one that remembers the dreams. He's the one the TV lady talks to. The Doctor recognizes that something is special about Wilf. Oh, Wilf. Please, please, please be a Time Lord! Because that means Donna is part Time Lord and there should be a way to fix her now!
-Lucy isn't a total idiot. I loved the sentiment, even if the scene was campy enough to be worthy of a place in the 1960s Batman series.
-The conversation in the cafe with Wilf and the Doctor is pure gold! David really shines as a brilliant actor there. The only part I didn't like was the part where the Doctor dismisses his 11th self as a stranger. It just sounded like a pot-shot from Rusty to me.
-The Master is brilliant. No, I do not mean that John Simm makes a brilliant Master - I've never liked him in the role. But we get to see that the Master is a member of the Doctor's race and his intellectual equal. In season 3 I always felt that we were told that, but never really shown it. Finally, we get to see it
-Donna didn't change into the Master!!!! Therefore Donna isn't human! Therefore Donna can be fixed! Oh Please!
-THE TIME LORDS ARE BACK! I know lots of people have griped that they never want them back, but I desperately do. I really loved the Doctor a lot more when he was a renegade. These last 5 years he's not had anything to be a renegade running from and I just feel the show was missing an important element.
The bad:
-The Master as the Bionic Man. Oh Please! This isn't "Life on Mars!" Please leave the 70's science fiction where it belongs! (Unless, of course, it is Doctor Who 1970s science fiction).
-The cactus people. I love Wilf's name for them, and I love the reference back to VotD. But I just get the feeling that they are disposable filler like the Fly People in "Planet of the Dead";.
-Obama. I love President Obama more than any president we have had in my lifetime. But the references and scenes of him altered between being overly campy and overly creepy.
-The Master's table manners. So much for eating seconds of turkey tonight . . .
Overall, I'm willing to say it was pretty good. Personally, I feel that Rusty has just really out worn his welcome and everything he writes now just shows that he is completely out of decent ideas. But I desperately want it to be good because DT deserves a great send-off.
