Ugh

As of yesterday morning--one of the several times I woke up--I had a fair-to-middlin' sore throat. Sometime in the early afternoon, Meg and I happened to be at Safeway anyhoo, so she recommended that I get some cough drops. The conversation went something like this ( Read more... )

(1) Drink lots of non-caffinated fluids. Things with a small amount of fat/oil (think chicken soup) help to coat and soothe the throat. Also consider tea with honey.

(2) Plenty of rest. Sleep is not for the weak, it is for you to get better.

(3) Hot baths/showers help move steam into your lungs and thin out the mucoid crud which causes coughs. When I'm sick it's not unusual for me to take at least 2 baths/showers daily simply to feel better.

Get better soon!

I have found that cold-eeze actually does a better job with people starting to get sick than anything else. There's zinc in them and I don't know what else... they cost more, have several flavors and well, we're addicted now.

I'm gonna be one of those kooks who advocates loads of vitamin C. A half-gram to a gram taken a few times daily does quite a bit for me when I'm sickening... at the very least, it plays a significant role in repairing those soft tissues in the throat.

I keep meaning to pick up more Yin Chiao, as well -- a Chinese cold remedy which, although it can't get rid of a virus, at least seems to keep it from getting any worse. If taken when things are still at the "sore throat, might get worse" stage, it tends to keep it at a few days of sore throat and nothing more. It kept me from succumbing to flu when I was doing loooong periods of sitting in a warehouse for the six days of Battlebots.
