Technically this isn't the last, there's still the director's cut episodes, but I'm not watching that tonight . . . and holy crap, are these last two episodes a jumbled mess. I take it they ran out of money or something, given all the reused footage and still frames? No wonder they made an Evangelion movie to try and clear things up. I'll have to

Yes, they did run out of money. Hence the reason why the last run of episodes leading up to the end became quieter, with many still, thoughtful moments. The film END OF EVANGELION is the way it was supposedly intended to end. And it's a whopper of a finale.
