Posted in a separate entry because the post to chapter 6 was too huge to include it. XD
ANTIQUE (EPILOGUE)
I DON'T FEEL LIKE COPYING AND PASTING ALL THE EXTRA CRAP THAT USUALLY GOES ALONG WITH THIS. IF YOU HAVE READ THE OTHER CHAPTERS YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT THIS IS ABOUT BLAH BLAH BLAH.
EPILOGUE:
I. FEBRUARY 2009, LOS ANGELES, CA
Kris moved the last box into Adam's apartment, grinning proudly as the other man ran up and hugged him, beaming back as they celebrated the final day that Kris would have to live with the McIntyres and the first day of a new part of their lives. Both of them flopped onto the couch, exhausted and not even wanting to cut open the boxes and start unpacking Kris's things at the moment.
"I'm really proud of you," Adam whispered, draping an arm over Kris's shoulders as they sunk into the couch.
Kris's cell phone rang, and he reached to pick it up, receiving the tenth call from his mother that week. The last time she had called just to check on him, and that was five minutes ago. He couldn't help but wonder what she was actually calling about this time.
"Kris, you're not going to believe it," Mrs. Allen said quickly, nearly unintelligibly.
"What happened? Dad didn't do anything stupid again, did he?"
"No, but you are on the right track when you say your father was involved. Today we were cleaning out your old room looking for those guitar booklets you wanted when he started digging around in your closet."
"Wow, he was digging around in my closet. That is sosurprising."
"No, it's not just that...He found Adam."
Kris chuckled. "Uh...no, Adam is right next to me."
He imagined his mother rolling her eyes as she continued.
"No, Kristopher, I mean that old figurine of yours."
"You're joking, right?"
"No, we're serious. Completely serious. He was tucked away in the pocket of some leather jacket in the back of your closet."
Kris laughed again, shaking his head. "If you're really serious, send a picture message of the doll and of this mysterious jacket."
"You know what? I will."
The phone went silent as the call disconnected. Kris leaned into the other man, not expecting anything to come of his brief conversation with his mother. Suddenly though, he found himself being proven wrong as his cell phone went off. He opened it, letting Adam look over his shoulder as he looked over the message:
A picture of a brown leather jacket sprawled out on his bed with the figurine lying next to it titled "Do you believe me now".
Kris's mouth gaped as Adam nuzzled his ear.
"Is this him?" he asked.
"...Yes." A blush fell on Kris's face.
"I guess I have him to thank for bringing you to me."
II. MAY 2009, LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA
Things were becoming clearer for everyone involved, and thank God they were, Kris realized, or things would never get better for any of them. Every night he prayed for a better life for everyone else, but now just recently it seemed like things were improving.
Todd and Scott were finally starting to narrow down their search for their new apartment. Allison had found someone special in her life and had just gotten out of her first year at college. Megan hadn't quite left the safety of Lizabelle's yet, but she was starting to take on bar gigs herself, hoping to set aside enough money to start pursuing her singing more seriously. And most importantly, Adam was promoted from a swing to the primary understudy in the local production that was happening.
If things were going so fantastically though, why did Kris still feel like something was missing?
He had never prayed a lot before despite his Christian faith, but now he had started every night before he closed his eyes and drifted to sleep, like he was doing now. He thanked God for blessing his friends and he thanked him everyday for bringing Adam into his life. He thanked God that something was finally beginning in the second step of his music career.
And that's when it hit him.
Adam the figurine needed to go home.
III. NOVEMBER 2009, CONWAY, ARKANSAS
Kris arrived at the front step, out of breath and sweat dripping off his forehead. When he heard that she was moving away in a matter of days he had to rush over there as fast as he could, even taking an overnight flight. He didn't care how ridiculous it seemed that he had to fly back to Arkansas and do this himself. There wasn't going to be another chance if he let her evade now. It was hard enough trying to track her down. The last thing that needed to happen now was for her to remain so elusive.
He held the figurine in his hands, giving it one last kiss on its top hat and gazing adoringly into its sapphire eyes for one last time.
"I'm ready to say good-bye, Adam. It's time you went home," he whispered as he reached towards the doorbell, pushing it three times before the front door opened. He sighed in relief when he saw her there, with her aging blonde hair and her tired hazel eyes.
"Who are you?" she asked, her eyebrows shooting up.
"Eileen Cook?"
"Yes, that's me...Do I know you from somewhere? You look awfully familiar."
"I was an old friend of David's. I think the last time we met was after your grandfather's funeral. Am I wrong?"
Her eyes lit up as she recognized him. "Of course, I remember now."
Kris held up Adam, looking intently into the older woman's eyes.
"I believe this belongs to you."
