[OOC] Ficlet/Hana's night

(OOC: The Lady has an intruder and Hana gets a nasty surprise. Short and has some mild swearing. Happens tonight/June 26th.)

There was a knock on her office door. A moment later, a tall, slender man stepped inside. It was The Lady’s resident peacock, Kane. “Mistress,” he began, “I apologize for disturbing you but there is a slight situation that requires your attention.”

Odd. Hanamura looked up. “Oh? And what is this situation?” It was strange to have Kane coming to her. After a decade, the lad could handle just about everything there was when it came to The Lady.

The man nodded. “There was a boy who tried to sneak in.” She raised an eyebrow. That wasn’t anything new or special. It must have prompted him to explain more because Kane added, “he says he won’t leave until he speaks to you.”

She gave a loud sigh and her peacock a look. “Where is this boy now?” She wasn’t exactly pleased with having to deal with this herself. Dealing with intruders and annoyances fell under the umbrella of tasks for her security team. “What happened to our bouncer? Failed to show again?” The peacock nodded and she gave another sigh. “Remind me to find a new one and soon.” She stood and added, “well, lead the way.”

They made their way downstairs and he led her to the garden door. Stopping in front of it, Kane told her, “we put him in here. It seemed like a good idea at the time.” He opened the door and Hanamura stepped through.

It was obvious just where this ‘intruder’ was. “I’d rather you didn’t destroy my herb garden, young man,” Hanamura called out to the boy. He looked over at her, a glare on his face. For a moment, Hanamura thought her eyes were playing tricks on her. “Kane,” she called to the peacock who was hovering just on the other side of the door. “I’ll be busy for a bit. You know what to do.” Before the Anima could say anything, Hanamura closed the door.

“Step closer, dear,” she called out to the boy. It was dark out but the lights from The Lady had the small yard fairly well lit.

“Don’t call me that! I’m not your dear,” the boy snapped back.

She sighed. “Just a habit. Now, come here.”

The boy kept glaring but walked over after a few moments, stopping about an arms length away. He met her eyes, the anger in them clearly obvious. So it hadn’t been a trick of the light. “Do you know who I am?” He practically spat the question out.

Hanamura nodded. “You look just like him, you know.” Apparently that was the wrong thing to say because if anything, it just made the fire in the boy’s eyes even hotter. She looked over the boy, not exactly pleased that the child stood a little taller than herself. She was fairly tall for a woman and it didn’t quite seem fair that this boy was bigger. He was a child. Children were supposed to be little.

“Well, boy, do you have a name?” She’d never bothered giving him one, leaving that to the couple who’d taken him in.

He stood, straight and tall. “I’m not telling you.” She raised an eyebrow and he mirrored it.

“Such a bratty child.” Hard to believe he’d ever come from her body. “Fine then, have it your way, boy.” There was a brief paused. “Why did you come here?” And more importantly, how in the world did the boy know to come. She’d been explicitly clear with the couple she’d given the boy to all those years ago that he was to never know who she was.

He just kept glaring. “You made everything go wrong.” It was all her fault. The family he’d had as a little child and all the hate and anger his adoptive parents had had. Things had apparently been fine until something Hanamura had done and then things went downhill. He’d remembered hearing those parents arguing and his ‘mother’ wanting to just give him back to the woman now standing in front of him.

She crossed her arms and just looked at the boy. “Child, I don’t know what delusions you hold-”

“I’m not delusional, you old hag!” It really was all her fault.

An old hag? Hanamura looked at the boy. He should be glad she didn’t reach over and swat his behind. “Leave, child. And don’t come back unless it’s to be as a paying customer in a few years.”

“Don’t worry,” he said, kicking the ground, “I won’t be back unless it’s to burn this stupid, disgusting place down!”

“You should really watch your tongue, boy.” Hanamura adjusted her glasses. “It’ll get you in trouble one day, I’m sure. That is, if it hasn’t already.” She shook her head. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were raised in a barn.” The child was rude and had no manners. Really, the only thing Hanamura could see that the boy had going for him was that pretty face of his.

He clenched a fist. “You don’t know anything about me. Don’t talk like you do.”

“Believe me, boy, I’m rather fine with having nothing to do with you.” She sighed. “Leave.”

The child kicked the ground one more time. “Gladly.” She went to open the door to have him led out but he was already heading over towards the brick wall that went around the small garden. She watched as he nimbly climbed up a small tree. He stopped on top of the wall and looked at her. “Hope you enjoy your miserable life, hag.”

Before she could respond in any way, he was gone. “Insolent brat,” she muttered under her breath. And there went a perfectly fine evening absolutely spoiled by that nasty little surprise.

She stepped back inside and found Kane still standing there. Raising an eyebrow at her most trusted Anima, the guy grinned. “I’m not to be disturbed for the rest of the night.” She’d most certainly rather not deal with more people after that bratty child with his horrible temper. She huffed. Just like his damn father. “The boy’s gone but if that child ever returns, have him escorted off the property or watched by security until he gets bored and leaves of his own accord.” Somehow, she couldn’t bring herself to order him to be roughed up. Damn nostalgic sentimentality. It’d be the downfall of her if she didn’t watch it. “Understand?”

“Yes, Mistress.” The ever-loyal peacock nodded. “You rest and I’ll take care of everything for you.” She smiled a little and patted his arm before slipping off her office where she’d be barricading herself for the rest of the night. Damn, annoying children. That boy just proved every little thing she disliked about them.
