I don't know, All in the Family (and its British counterpart?) could also fill that role and it was much earlier.

Did All in the Family not come out with a preachy moral center on occasion?

I liked it when I started to get into my teens and it was in its final seasons. I love it now.

I saw an episode recently, and it was just so dirty and sleazy. I'm not exactly a Puritan, but it seemed to be crude for the sake of being crude.

I prefer Frasier and M*A*S*H.

It's dirty and sleazy, but not for the sake of a cheap laugh. It has to be dirty to speak to our darkest desires. I wouldn't have sex with my wife imagining her to be someone else, but I identify with Al Bundy when he does.
