Hello!
We've been discussing this and we really appreciate the questions!
What is the minimum word count?
2000
I'm wondering about what types of mediums are be allowed, for example crafts, vids and fanmixes, podfics, etc. Because. I make collages and cut-paper stuff for fun, it's not exactly traditional.
All art must feature a Remus & Sirius narrative, and must be visual, original art. By original art, we mean that the final product must be an original product of the artist. Using photos for reference is fine, and you can use whatever traditional or digital medium you require, so long as the art starts and finishes as your own product. For example, the art can look just like a photo of Gary Oldman - if the artist wants, but it cannot BE a photo of Gary Oldman manipulated in photoshop.
So: fanmixes - no, fanvids - no (tell a story & negate the Fic Round of this fest), crafts - depending on a case by case basis (this is because things like knitting generally aren't narrative enough, and authors deserve equally fic-inspiring art, but 'crafts' is too generic a term to just say 'no'), podfic - no.
I'm curious about the schedule~ Can there be a period where the artist and authors collaborate to create something more wholistic like a comic type or sequential art/illustrated storybook type?
This is one of the ideas we have bouncing around for the so-called Lightning Round, but currently further rounds and collaboration ideas are in the 'We'll Cross That Bridge When We Get to It' file. Right now it's looking like a round where those who wanted to write drabbles/shorter fics, make fanmixes, fanvids, crafts, etc. have a chance to claim from the fics produced.
Related questions applicable to this answer:
- If a lightning round is done, what about considering mini-fsts as a submission? So an artwork could get a story and a soundtrack?
- I like the suggestion made earlier about soundtracks and other multimedia malarky in the lightening round... Just wondering about maybe letting authors in on the Lightning Round too? Would give people like me a chance to get involved, writing drabbles or mini-remixes or whatever? I don't know if people would get quite possessive / intimidated, though...
- Will there be future round where fic is written first, art 2n
What if I'm not inspired by the art assigned to me?
When writers sign up - after the art has been posted - comments will be screened on that post, and if there is a piece you simply CANNOT write for, please let us know. That being said, this is life-or-death/goes-against-every-moral-fibre-you-possess kind of CANNOT. We don't wanna hear it if it's just because the piece has Remus & Sirius depicted as pirates. That can be worked around.
Are comics are allowed & how much does the fic have to incorporate the art it came from??
...Yes - but it's a wee bit tricky: The less specific the art, the better (which is why we don't want text), but the writers do need something to grasp hold of: an emotion, an outfit, the background, etc. Give us something to grab and run with. Like you're a detective solving a crime and you're creating ONE clue - not sitting in court arguing a case with a chain of events. So, that's how Authors should view the art assigned to them. Take with it what you will and CREATE! But don't simply offhandedly mention the scenario and then proceed to write your own story.
I was wondering if the artists could be encouraged to give something that would show a bit of a story. I know you said no thought/dialogue bubbles but that they could use words in other ways (street signs and such). The fear is that someone will submit a piece that doesn't really tell anything and could be from anywhere. Maybe a "suggestions for the stuck artist"? I do know that some artists would be able to show a picture that anybody would snatch up because a world could be created around it. But what about the writer who is stuck with just a drawing of Remus and Sirius with no background, no hints...??
We're working this out, but there's no reason the artist and author can't discuss things if they'd like! but a more thorough answer will be coming. :
I assume you need an equal number of authors as artists?
We're still tallying the numbers of possible participants, but it seems like the authors outnumber the artists by quite a large margin - as is the case generally in the fandom. If the numbers don't balance out, the two authors (or more!) may end up assigned to one artwork. Since it's been previously stated how different the outcomes could be, this shouldn't be a problem.
When can art/fic be reposted to personal journals and/or other communities?
Feel free to link the post of your art from Shaggy, but please refrain from posting art elsewhere until the end of the fest. This is because the art will be assigned to authors who will be asked to draw inspiration from it. The more places the art is posted, the less special it would be for the writer. Same goes for fic, please wait until all fic has been posted and the fest officially ends to repost.
JUST A REMINDER: Official Artist Sign-Ups are less than a month away!
