As if I needed more proof that Bush is a moron, he's nominated Roberts to be the Chief Justice, not just an associate ( Read more... )

I was sad to hear Walken wasn't really running for president. Bush is just... ugh.

I'd say give the guy a break. Of course he wants his guy to be top banana. It's only human...and it's only the government where it's not what you know but who you know (ah...the wonderful government circle jerk...love it). If it were any other president, they'd see the opportunity and try to pounce on it too. That said, I have no opinion on whether the guy should be CJ or not. From everything I've read, the man is smart, dedicated, and way less political than he could be. And he's young enough to not completely have forgotten what it is like to live in the real world (as it sometimes seems that other justices have done ( ... )

No, you don't give a rookie such an important job. Part of what the managing partner does is help pick exactly which cases they will review. It makes a huge impact on the legal juricprudence in this country. There are many rulings that are essentially given the nod by the Supreme Court deciding not to review the case. Attempting to give that job to a neophyte is asine. Shags is quite right in that it will firm up opposition to Roberts.

Now, I have nothing for or against the man, but I would refuse to confirm him if the Prez tried to put him in the CJ spot. He just killed the chances for his top nominee.

::nods:: Okay, I can see that. Now, let us ask "why did he do this?"

It's a plot! Break out your tin foil hats! (I've already got mine on.) ;)

Getting a new chief justice of Bush's choosing in place quickly also avoids the scenario of having liberal Justice
John Paul Stevens making the decisions about whom to assign cases to and making other decisions that could influence court deliberations. As the court's senior justice, Stevens would take over Rehnquist's administrative duties until a new chief is confirmed.

From some Yahoo article that I didn't bother to grab the URL of.

Gawd. The man is completely shameless. Chutzpah doesn't even begin to describe...

The thing is, he *thinks* he's going to make a big score for his agenda. But I agree with others that trying to place a new guy in the top position will do more to piss off and alienate the rest than his tiny brain can imagine.

Mark my words, I see ugly confrontations in this country coming.

That's just stupid. I don't even understand why he's doing it. Between Louisana, this, and a bunch of other stuff, I'm starting to get seriously scared of the government.
