Sulking, brooding, pondering, reflecting... name any synonym of them and Edward is a professional at them. In fact, he's such a professional at them that there were probably very few things that could ever get his attention without some effort. But then he supposes that when all you have is time, you can afford spending some of it on fretting and ( Read more... )

Bella has been here a couple of times. Enough to get the run down on everything. She's yet to see anyone from home though and the entire time she's here she relives that dark period of her life without Edward. Except this time, she's yet to see her best friend to help ease the pain. Today she arrived a couple of hours ago, checked to make sure the apartment she'd procured on her first visit was all as she'd left it then gone to the bookstore. She walks out with a bag full of books, stops and contemplates coffee then heads back toward the apartment building sans coffee. The bag of books is enough for her to carry. She ducks her head and tucks her hair behind one ear, certain she's being watched. It only takes her a moment to see him in the shadow and then for several moments more she's certain he's an illusion. It's all a flash back to the time he left her ( ... )

He's there in an instant, catching her just before she hits the gravel and helping her back up to her feet. Yes, this is his Bella. He can't read her mind, she's a blank. And of course the trip. No one else in the world was as clumsy as his Bella. His arms wrap tight around her and as difficult as it is on his control, he focuses for a moment on her warmth, on that heartbeat, on the breath that she takes. It's lovely. It's something he's missed so severely that he aches in this first moment of taking it in.

"Bella... my, Isabella..." He whispers. "You're alive..." He forces himself to say it the more common, natural way instead of the version that's in his mind: 'You have life...'.

Being this close to him always makes it difficult to breathe and difficult to concentrate. She forces herself to take a couple of deep breathes. Strike that. It doesn't actually help her concentrate. In fact it makes the situation worse. Instead she takes shallow breathes, eyes squeezed tightly shut. She opens them after a moment.

"And you're...you." She puts her hand against his chest then furrows her brow a bit. "Of course I am. Why wouldn't I be?"

Edward is anything but stupid. His kind doesn't get to be as old as he is by being stupid. He might not always make the best decisions, but he's far from stupid. It stands to reason that if Renesmee is well past the age she should be, that Bella could be from the opposite end of the time line. And really, inside he was leaping for joy at the idea that Bella, his Belle, could be both his and have life. And at the same time, they could have Renesmee at the same time. They could have it all. Or he could have it all. It added a whole new dynamic to everything.

And he might have responded by squeezing her tighter, holding her closer and pressing his lips into her hair to inhale a deep breath of her. Just the scent of her made him feel high. "Nothing, never mind. You're perfect, Bella. Perfect.
