And secondly, you really should post here more--I love reading about what you're up to, and the tidbits on FB aren't nearly satisfying enough.
It is disheartening to see the kind of education kids come away with in so many places (and makes me appreciate some of the good teachers we had in high school). The students I tutor come from all over the country, and I see some of the same problems with writing and the inability to form a basic argument, or write proper sentences, or analyze literature on a pretty basic level. But at the same time, they're getting help, and some of them are in college, and they're trying. It is great when you know they've taken something from a lesson, isn't it?
I'm glad you're having such a positive experience with both the teaching and the program. Hope to hear more about it!

I never thought if how lucky we were to go to high school where we did until I started teaching. I mean, there are a lot of kids who had a larger variety of courses than we did, but it's just become really obvious to me that ours was just a freaking good school.
