I fully expected to never again write in this journal - to the inexplicable disappointment of a few people, it seems - but given the events of Saturday evening and some misapprehensions that already seem to be arising about them, I thought that I better put fingers to keyboard here once again. Since Facebook still doesn’t have a useful blogging ( Read more... )

Thank you. I don't mean to sound ungracious for your compliments, but I could list at least half a dozen things I did wrong there.

By not smacking him down earlier, or reporting him to the police? Maybe...

Sounds like you put up with more than many people who consider themselves reasonable would have put up with before taking the guy down. I'm impressed.

I love the way people keep ascribing my naked cowardice to "being reasonable". Heh.

Heh, I know you are not one of those people that consider themselves reasonable. I guess being reasonable is one of those things like having a sense of humour; the people who pride themselves upon possessing such a quality tend not to be able to back the pride up with evidence.

Besides, naked cowardice would have been legging it howling, or hanging back and letting them dawdle their way out in the first place even if it meant risking missing the coach.

All I wanted was to get us to our coach. A braver man with my training would have intercepted his first blow, applied a suitable joint lock and then politely introduced his face to Mr. Pavement.

But over here, you were cleared to put him on the ground the first time he struck you.

But you are a better person than I. I probably would have put him on the train tracks.

Whereas I would say that you are probably the better person in this circumstance, if you would have had the courage to stand up to him sooner and more emphatically.

It's not cut and dried. You've got some leeway in doing so, but, the more combat training you've got, the more it's on your head to use "reasonable force" to stop an assailant. If you're a boxer, for instance, your hands can be considered lethal weapons.

On the other hand, someone swings for you, then fuck it, better they hit the floor hard than they get a chance to injure you.

Thank you. That's very kind of you! I wouldn't go getting used to it or anything, though. Heh.
