I've been trying to get through Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles. Trying. As fun as it is to see Summer Glau beat up people, I'm on episode 3, and every time I watch it for even 5 minutes I'm overwhelmed by how... right wing it is. Well, Firefly is all about personal freedom and sticking it to the Man as much as possible. IE, government is bad and monolithic (see especially the movie) whereas the cowboy self-reliant I-make-my-own-rules thing is emphasized. Some of the reason I am not the biggest of fans and my libertarian/rightish friends seem to love it.

But what about the portrayal of Mal? He does the right thing, is extremely protective of his crew and ship, and will do anything to keep flying (except when it conflicts with the above).

Actually, yeah, that does sound like a libertarian/rightish character.
